Great hornet shot, wev! How far were you away from it? I've taken a few from a couple of inches and didn't feel threatened though maybe our guys are a bit more docile than yours. :D

About three inches. Usually they are pretty calm even close, but I have had them get agitated and start doing attack runs at me. Only been stung once.

It took me a while to find this image. Though technically not an insect but an arachnid, this is close enough for government work.

Everyone has heard of black widow spiders but many are not aware that there are other "widow's" as well. There are also red and brown (pictured here in my garage) as well. Though smaller than black widows, brown widow venom is actually more potent but they inject less when they bite so it is kind of a wash. I have been bitten by a black widow and I am here to tell you it does NOT come highly recommended!!!

The Natural Science department send students over to do a survey of brown and black widows in the hort department. When they got to a hundred, they gave up and left. We check everything very carefully before starting any work.

We have a large clump of lavender at work which is attracting huge numbers of butterflies and moths, including Hummingbird Hawkmoths. Finally able to get photos of them. :D

A little cooler today. Not much out. I got some great shots of ants tending some aphids.
