One of my favorite flower photo. Amazing beautiful these colors and absolutely great composition.
The weather was absolutely gorgeous yesterday when I decided to go for a walk on the top of this retaining wall. Please notice the wall is quite high! The water below is a river. The tow path curves to the left (where the woman in pink is walking), and goes out of the photo before curving back to the right--something like an 'S' curve. I walked along for a short bit then I got to around the spot where the group of women are standing.
I looked down below my feet and saw this pretty purple flower growing up out of the rocky retaining wall. It surprised me that this flower was able to root itself amid all the rocks because even the weeds are sparse. The water is much further away than it looks in the photo (shot at 70mm on a DX body) so I didn't dare to look down. There isn't any type of handrailing up on the towpath so I didn't want to topple forward down the embankment.
I moved to my left, and zooming out to 300mm, I shot the photo below. I wish I could have had a better vantage point to see into the flower, but it just wasn't possible. The photo below isn't edited at all except for resizing for the forum. I wanted the rocky background and sparse growth to show as it was in its environment. The photo is a little soft, but that's characteristic of the lens when zoomed all the way out. I like the softness which is in stark contrast to the harshness of the rocks and weeds.

Yes its an orchid. We call them a Golden Orchid, but have also heard them called Curly Brown. They grow wild in the bush around our property. This one is growing on the rocks beside the pool. It has a couple of big sprays of flowers at the moment. Here is one flower singled out.
