Id like here to say something in defense of experts..
An expert is someone who feels they know something that they wish to share , and has some solid reason to believe what it is.
They too might be wrong.. I stuck my neck out earlier in a post to share what it is I think I can say solidly, that doesn't help me any.

That said, the bird is technically a White egret, The Great White egret term , does get used for it as well.
The Great Blue heron has a white morph, which gets called sometimes Great White heron.
Its said the Great egret and Great blue heron interbreed as well.
So actually any of the terms has an element of doubt , and without blood tests ...

The terms Egret and Heron don't mean anything other than by tradition and decision of naming committees.

but the safer thing is to say nothing , even when I feel I could be of assistance
so Ill stand corrected and do that next time.

Please don't stay silent. I am trying to learn as much as I can about birds, having just started to seriously photograph them in the last year. I'll take all the info I can get, and input from folks like you is important! :)

Thanks thats nice of you to say , but really the only difference between me and many of the folks here is that I have a harder time keeping my mouth shut, and I get uncomfortable that its off-putting- which isn't my intent- I just aim to fill a gap here and there , in part, to repay what I learn from the other guys, who could easily be called 'expert' in their own right.

None taken Mike , I figured it to be joking. Its just that most folks here don't seem to label themselves as experts, so the comfort level about making technical comment -even when its asked for might not be high. It may always feel like stepping on feet. Out of the many many folks that look here, frankly the response rate to questions is really pretty low.
But I guess thats just how it is.
