Single point most of the time. Find it easier to lock onto BIFs.

You've never had issues with focus searching with this on the 7100?

No. Dynamic area focus is supposed to provide quick and accurate focusing on moving subjects, and it works well for me. I guess I could try single area, but I have taken a lot of well focused BIF shots where the bird didn't stay in the middle of the frame despite my best efforts. Dynamic area focus is the only explanation for why those shots came out well.

I also use only the central sensor. If the camera supports group AF (my D3300 does not), then I believe (correct me if I am wrong) that once the focus is acquired at selected point, the camera will track the object shifting focus points.

That is how it is supposed to work yes.

Thanks for the responses. Like I figured people use all different settings and they work for them. I need to try the settings more and see how they do and choose one for me. What frustrated me the other day is I totally missed some passes of birds flying by because I could not get the sensor on the bird and then when I thought I had I press the button to focus and it did not grab focus and the lens pulled the focus all the way back and I could see nothing but blur. Thought there might be a better way. Of course a newer body might help with quicker more accurate focus. Just need to find the money tree and pick some for a new 7200.

Nice one,i see you can still remember how to use the D810 then:D

Thanks
Just been out for an hour or so trying to find some shots for my 52 in 2015 but didn't come back with anything I could use. This bird in flight shot was the best of a whole bunch, I am not in the same league as you on birds.
Need the right tool for the job and thats a DSLR and more practice.

The Micro 4/3 is a neat little camera but it can't compete with a DSLR when tracking birds in flight. Plus I don't have any tele lenses.

I often think those that push mirrorless for all have never tried many things with them.
