Man, I am not getting shots anything close to the clarity of the ones in this thread. I just tried to take some pics of some seagulls and they have pretty strong halos all around them. Starting to think there is something wrong with my copy.

D750, ISO 800, f10, 1/3200, so it's not motion or wide aperture

Show us your problems we may be able to help, your halos are most likley contrast halos which all lenses give in the right or wrong lighting conditions, they can be made worse in PP especially with sharpening.

These are crops, about 3:1. MOST of my pictures were throw-aways. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but man, I seem to get FAR more sharp, in focus pics with the Nikon 70-200 2.8... I wonder now if I would have been better off putting a doubler on it and shooting it on my old D7000 body... same effective magnification.

I agree there is nothing there to get exited about,a few things though there is no Exif so effectively no details to consider, your previous 70-200 would have given you a long end of 300mm you now have a long end of 900mm on the D7000,that in itself can take some getting used to,BIF is a difficult one to learn to use a lens three times as long on.
What about static shots how are they, these lenses will give better than that,my lens is only let down by one thing and thats me,hand holding 900mm is a bit much for me,i would use it a bit more before doing anything drastic as i cant see a 2x converter and then the extra cropping matching what the Tamron can turn out.

FIND AN OBJECT WITH DETAIL AND SHOT IT @ 50 FT TILL YOU FIND A SWEET SPOT.
ISO AND SHUTTER SPEED WILL BE ALOT HIGHER THAN YOUR 70-200.

Thanks folks. Yeah, new at the longer lengths. My biggest concern was about 20 in focus shots out of 200. I'm also new to Lightroom (switched from iPhoto/Aperture), so I'm not sure how to get the EXIF embedded yet... kind of overwhelming.

FWIW, the shots were on my D750, so full frame, but I have a D7000 as well and will try 900mm soon. That should allow less cropping and better pics I suppose.

I brought it to work today to try out, and tomorrow afternoon I can try on a tripod or monopod.
