Possibly a new Nikon 200-500

Tripod bracket is OK, although it doesn't remove like the 70-200 (leaving the mount). And the tip of the lens looks goofy with it removed, showing a bunch of bolts.

@ singlerosa
have you been able to try it with a teleconverter , I am curious if it works with a TC20 or if you need to manual focus ..........

That will probably depend on you camera model,my guess would be your D7100 would in decent light though i bet IQ takes a knock.

I have no TCs, but this lens can use a 1.4 and maintain autofocus at f/8. Anything bigger and it's manual focus (from what I understand).

I had one on back order from Nikon USA, but the nice lady on the phone had no idea when they were getting more stock . I canceled order.
She did tell me that the lenses are are basically being built in batches and that back orders are 1st priority and then if any are left they go to distributors .
I also noticed that any ebay sellers with stock have jacked the price up anywhere from 1500-2000 bucks
I got lucky and got one of the last 2 Kenmore camera was selling on ebay . and they didn't do any price gouging at all , even free shipping .
Tracking says it will be here Monday which coincidently is Happy Birthday to me !
Can't wait ........................

WOW! just about sums up this monster , the VR seems to work marvelously.
the images so far have been real good at 500mm on the bird feeder !
Did I mention how big this puppy is ?
And the auto focus is wicked fast . haven't tried a converter yet .
I am not paying 500 bucks for a 1.4x converter . WTF

Don't know about wicked fast. It's noticeably slower than my 70-200, which can be expected, given the price diff. But you're right about the VR. Here's a shot from yesterday @ 1/400, although I was cheating and using a monopod. :)

my copy is wicked fast , right on par with my 70-200 , maybe even just a touch faster .
Here's a handheld (well leaning on the porch rail , this thing is heavy) shot at 500mm with the VR turned on 1/250 at f9 iso 720

here's another at 500 mm setting with the tc20 e ii converter (it try's to auto-focus at 500mm setting but only has about a 5% or less success rate )
it is not cropped that's all 24 glorious mega pixel
on my 7100 that's equal to a 1500 mm lens
focus was done manually but on the M/A setting

You've got some crazy reach with DX and a 2x. The more I shoot with it, the more I like it. It's taking a while to get used to the weight for hand held shots, being almost 2lbs heavier than the 700-200 and 3X the weight of my 70-300. Here's a handheld with SS cranked up a bit. It's certainly given my track photos a different look vs shooting with my 24-70 & 70-200.

I only have a 2x converter . at 200 mm it was doing about 75% accurate AF
I think on a brighter day it may have better luck focusing with the 2x .
but this will only work with bodies that have f8 focus capability .
the 1.4x is supposed to work fantastic with this lens .
