Before i saw the second post i thought it was going to be Vaseline on a UV,or the old piece of stocking stretched over a Cockin holder with a hole in the middle.

I was gonna mess around with plastic bags until I spotted an empty water bottle. I tried the neck end first, but the thick stem on the top created defined rings. The design of the bottom has a more defusing effect.

Brought back old memories of being in the darkroom. I always kept a custom made holder with one of my wife's old stockings stretched over it to soften a print. Worked great

I wondered what it was that you used. Nice, inexpensive idea! :)

In the 1990's, a wedding photographer had me buy a UV filter, then she used clear nail polish to create a soft look around the outside edges with the center being clear. Worked nicely, was permanent, and didn't make a mess.

Wouldn't work on Nikon the lens would cut straight through and produce a sharp image :D

I'm not so sure about that. If using a fast lens such as f/2.8 or faster, it might work well when shooting wide open. Part of it might depend upon the focus distance.

We had the clear nail varnish for weddings but my wife like the Vaseline on the filter for studio work so she could adjust the amount depending on the condition of the sitter :D,i even tried to make a copy of the (i think it was called) imogen system, solid card with a larger hole in the middle surrounded by smaller holes
