So I have 2 cats and a dog. Needless to say, being easy and accessible subjects they get to see the business end of my lens more often than not. I've also gotten to shoot some friends pets as well (which can be an issue with a dog that won't listen) but we're already getting off topic. Anyways, I got a decent shot of my dog the other day and it prompted me to start this thread. Let's see those nice aminal shots.

That shot shows just how good you and that lens are. I'll bet there are allot of 70-200 2.8 owners that can't get that shot. Great images from "kit" lenses are a good reality check for us all.

I had uploaded some photos of my dog Bentley to the thread but the quality of the images deteriorated as soon as I uploaded them so I deleted them. I had to get them off of FB because my computer screen recently crashed and I have yet to retrieve all my photos. I will have to upload them later on when I get a chance to transfer them from my old laptop to my new one.

I posted the first shot in the critique area but this may be a better venue. I love shooting my dogs! All my dogs are working dogs in Search and Rescue, AKC Hunt Tests, or both.

Spirit catching air. Need to upgrade from my D50 to shoot fast enough to get her all in tghe picture. She leaps even if she just thinks I will throw a bumper. We call her "Loca" because she is crazy.

I love the "Flash, still young at heart" image! So full of life! And in no way is this a criticism of the image, it's awesome just like it is, but when you do get deep into editing, I would suggest working on this one and see if you can pull out any catch lights and/or any color in this pup's eyes. I suspect it will enhance that wonderful personality in his face.

Mojo, I don't have any experience with the advanced editing yet and that is where I plan to spend my time. The action shots are really just fun shots, not meant to be taken seioisly at all, but the shot of Flash is more of a portrait. I looked up and there he was, stoically watching the younger dogs playing. The light was really striking in the late afternoon.

The only thing I did was crop to a vertical. I will take your advice and use this photo to practice on. The darkness at the top of the photo takes away from the image for me. That is something to start with.

Here's a super fast example of what I was referring to with the eyes. Granted, I used your posted image with has very few pixels so it didn't come out quite as nice as it could with the full image but I think it illustrates the effect a little. When it comes to "portrait" photography, eyes are an all important aspect to a good
image!
