First entry.

The corner of my car, shot with my 50mm, with a square cutout in front of the lens to shape the bokeh formed by the trees in the background, with sunlight streaming therethrough.

Second entry.

Same square cutout on the front of my 50mm lens. This time, the bokeh is provided by the top edge of some shrubbery in the near foreground.

Who says you have to “Be there or be square”? Why can't you be both?

Monthly Assignment: B&W composition in a square

This month's assignment is one about composition. And what better way to compose than in Black and White. Since November is a month that is usually a bit darker any way, I thought we'd make it a bit more interesting that you purposely compose for the square format.

So, ready, get to your camera and try to see just the square inside your viewfinders. You can do any subjects, use any lens, use whatever technique you want, just remember that light and composition will be the important things that should stick out of your photographs.

Assignments are designed to help you grow your photography skills and creativity, and have fun doing so. Assignments are to make all of us photographers think outside the box also.

The Rules
  1. Any photo submitted for a monthly assignment must be taken during the month specified in the assignment thread and taken by you! Because not all EXIFdata can be verified, we will use the honor system.
  2. Photos must be posted to the thread in order to be considered for the challenge. Links to photos will not be considered an entry.
  3. Only three photo entries per member, for each assignment, unless otherwise indicated.
  4. Assignments will be judged solely by the panel. Individual voting via post "likes" will be incorporated into the final selection of the winning photo.
  5. Judging criteria is based on the Twelve Elements of a Merit Image.
  6. The panel will select 5 shots to be displayed in the Monthly Challenge forum and homepage of the site.
There will be no cash or prizes awarded for the Weekly Challenge, unless specifically noted by the site administrator.

Any photo will be accepted for the assignment. Edited/straight out of the camera, it does not matter. You are left with complete freedom to do whatever genre of photography you wish to do, and your own interpretation of the assignment subject.

Interesting assignment. I really do like the 1:1 aspect ratio. I was wondering though, instead of cropping the image in post, do any of the Nikon cameras have an option to change the aspect ratio in-camera? I don't remember if my D7100 did or not. It would save time and most importantly, if you can see the scene in 1:1 in the first place, it would help your composition. Just a thought.
