Nikon J1 Lens error

Hi i wonder if anyone can help me. I have been given a Nikon J1 with a 10-30 lens - but it is faulty. When i switch it on the camera makes a clicking noise and the screen says ‘Check Lens. Pictures can only be taken with a lens attached’. Then it says ‘Lens error. Reattach the lens’. When i switch the camera on, it makes a clicking noise too.
the lens is attached but it doesn’t recognise it. Is this fixable? It was give to me so I’m quite happy to try to fix myself if at all possible. Just seems a shame if its possible to fix or fix without it costing a fortune.

Brent's recommendation to clean contacts is a great first step. If that doesn't work, the 10-30mm lens is retractable. Does it in fact retract? The blades may have gotten "dirty". You can try GENTLY wiping and see if they move. That being said, quite a while ago we had a 10-30mm fail. We found it cheaper to replace than repair.
