Nikon D5100 w/ 18-200mm lens

I noticed that BestBuy "corrected" the price back up over 1100 dollar,,, which makes way more sense, I think that it was a mistake, and for those (including myself), a deal of a lifetime. Already got the tracking number,, so its on its way..

I dropped my 18x200 years ago, paid for two repairs, and second repair failed, so I am so looking forward using a 18x200 again (for my 7000).

My wife use the D80,, so going to give her the option of swapping out the D80 for the 5100, not sure,, if she will,, the D80 has built in focus motor drive, and 5100 does not, so whe will loose access to some of my and her lens such as the 50mm 1.8D and 60mm D,,, so,, maybe it will be on ebay by next week.

I am thinking a fair price would be 450-500 dollars,,, for a brand new 5100,,

I got the deal too, wonder if I should sell my 18-200mm since: i'm beginner, it seems heavy, greater distortion than 18-55, and I researched some sharpness test too, which is not as good as 18-55. I don't know if I will need the long range much, since I just want to take wide, family, and people photos now.
What do you think??

Well this is going to be my first DSLR so I'm very much a beginner as well. I dont know if I'd take advice from me on which lens is best for you. What I do know is I did a ton of research about different cameras, and lenses and from what I understand, this 18-200mm lens will be pretty much the only one you'll ever need. One professional was quoted as saying this lens is equivalent to an entire bag of lenses. On the other hand, if money is an issue you could probably easily sell this lens for 600-700 and buy a 18-55 for about 150-200 and start there???

I'd keep it if you don't absolutely need the money. It's just a wonderful travel lens. The 18-200 and a 35 1.8 is all you need for travel pics. Well, plus maybe an ultra-wide...

There are never enough lenses in the lens cabinet, but you can only use one at the time.

I have the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm and it would be really nice to not have to change them out all the time, or carry an extra one all the time. Ill let you know how they compare with the 18-200mm, at least if I personally can see any difference. The distortion can be fixed easily in lightroom or camera raw, and Im thinking the sharpness isn't going to be that much of a difference to make me want to sell it.

mine is already in Mass,, 1 day to show up... UPS tracker. yup, looks like they honored it,, the item was updated a few hours after my order back to the price of 1200 dollars. Must have been a glitch or human error.

Or you're getting the body with the kit lens instead. I always temper my excitement over price mistakes until it's in my hand.

It will be interesting to see what comes. I do hope it is what was advertised. I know from insider experience with one particular company that sometimes it is to good to be true. THe buyers and the folks who manage the particular website can make pricing errors, only to be caught once orders start flooding out. With consumer laws the way they are in the US, i would say BestBuy will have to honor the price/products as advertised for the folks who placed orders at the $649? price. Just seems a bit fishy that the price would go to a more "normal" dollar value after a day or so.

The price didn't go up though, the previous post about it going to 1,200 was for the D5100 with the 18-200mm AND the 18-55mm

Nikon D5100 16.2MP DSLR Camera Kit and Extra 18-200mm Zoom Lens

The $649 deal for just the body and the 18-200mm, stayed at $649, it just said "out of stock" after a while, and it stayed on the website as out of stock for $649 until just recently, now its not on their website at all.

Ah, okay :) Well, could be a smiliar situation where there was a pricing mistake and they just de-listed it as a package. Who knows....

Yeah true, I think someone forget an extra 9 in the price of the body, if you look at the screen print from the price breakdown below, the body is 49.99? They sell the body for 499.99 normally, and the discount for the lens below it seems realistic, so I think someone typed in $49.99 on accident when making this bundle.

I suspect the inventory sold out before the mistake was fixed, and well, they are just totally out of stock now! I'll post tomorrow,, when the package shows up.. if anything else, I will return for credit.

meanwhile,, I am selling 3 lens on ebay to help pay,, most likely a couple more old timers like a 50-300 (really neat old lens,, but I never ever use it,, so,,, I am not a collector, if a lens never ever gets used,, why keep it).

It will be interesting, I am selling my broken 18x200 for parts, wonder how much it will go for. seen them close fairly high (like over 150 dollars!).

Just got mine in!

Love it!

Its heavy duty feeling, and unlike the videos show, it doesnt creep when held up or down, and moved away from the ends? It feels much harder (in a good way) to zoom, and I would imagine that is why.

Ill have to test out the pictures compared to the 18-55
