Nikon 70-200 f4 Thread

And here is a some what low light sports shot with it. Not one of my best, but at ISO 400 which is lower than I would have been with 70-300 VR at this same time of day, its not too bad. The image looks better on my computer, it appears hazy here but it could be these tired eyes.

From a visit to Safari West in Santa Rosa, California. First time I tried the 70-200mm F/4 with the 1.4x teleconverter. The combination worked very well, both on foot and riding in a jeep (but stopped when I took my shots; framing a 280mm lens combo in a moving vehicle is hard!).

I'm curious how this lens behaves with a x2 TC, your pic was with good light but in low light situations how is the focus at f/8?

You have to first realize that it's not the lens that is doing the focusing, it's the camera. Some cameras behave better in low light and some cameras simply cannot have great focus ability at f8. It's the focusing components of the camera that gives the lens the orders to focus in such and such a way, so the lens has not much to do with it.

So, in order to satisfy your curiosity, you'd have to sample the body you have with any lens but using the depth of field preview button before letting the camera trying to focus. This would give you an idea of how it would behave with a lens that would have a maximum aperture of f8.

That photo was taken just outside of a local Kansas City camera store. Myself and the merchant had just walked outside to shoot a few sample shots to test the 70-200 f4, with the x2 TC. I'd heard that the combination wouldn't produce adequate photos, but this one turned out good, and the lighting was superb. That photo and a few others, convinced me to purchase the x2 TC. I haven't tried the combination in lowlight conditions, yet. I liked the x2 TC, 70-200 f4 and the D600 as a combo.

True, the D600 has a special-focus feature that allows for such.

Thank you both. I'll try your idea, Marcel, but my combo will be the same as I have a D600.
However, since it is a bigger investment I'm try to cover all the angles :)

I agree, the D600 sensor is great! I don't shoot too much beyond 200mm, so a longer lens would be a waste, although, would be nice to have the option. A 24mp Dx body would double the options of all my glass for much less money than one (high quality) lens. A D5200 may fit the bill and give me a more compact body option to compliment the "big" D600. The thought of my 70-200 becoming a 105-300 and my 105 macro becoming a 157mm macro is very appealing. Doubles the effectiveness of the $2500 spent on them.

This shot got me thinking, shot at 200mm, I still had to crop a lot; down to a 1.7mb image to get this. 100mm closer on a 24 mp Dx body would have left me more to work with. Crop mode on the D600 only leaves us 10.5mp (not the same size wise, but...,).

Mine arrived today, as i have a week holiday starting tomorrow i'll post some shots when i return :)

Well, I'm still on holiday so I can't download pics but first impressions are great.
Size and weight are perfect, portraits have a nice bokeh at f/4 and in my Nikon V1 with the FT-1 I now have a huge zoom :)

Pity the weather isn't giving me good macro motives, but I'm working on that.

I carry mine on a black rapid and hardly notice its there. It is heavy but with the right strap you wont notice that much of a difference. Now on a neck strap, no way, did that once and went home and ordered the black rapid.
