Nikon 300mm lens dilemma

It seems we all want the zoom. I have a 70-300 VR and have been thinking of adding the kenko 1.4 teleconverter. Most reviews say the result is almost the same, if not worse than you crop direct from the 70-300 with out converter.

I was searching the web sites for photographs taken with this combination but somehow didn't find any. I have not taken many bird shots but I feel 400 mm would be the min for wild life.

I am not sure about Sigma quality now, but 7 years ago you had to be prepared to order and return a few times to get a good one, at least on long telephoto side of the market. I do realize that to get a 500 most of us have no choice but Sigma, just make sure you order it from a vendor that has a good return program.
