Don't get me wrong, I think the 70-300 VR is a great lens. I did have the 55-200 and the 55-300 has a much more substantial feel to it. I don't think you would go wrong with either lens. The main benefit I see with the 70-300 is the FX capability. If that is a possibility, there really is no choice. For me, staying with DX, I liked the ability to go to 55mm on the low end. It made the lens much more versatile for me eliminating lens changing or getting caught with the wrong lens. As for IQ, I have been very pleased.
Having said all that, Curt you are getting a great lens!

Well I like the fact that with the 70-300mm I am using only the best part of the lens with my DX body (Sweet spot) . As I said I have that range covered with a few of my lenses such as my 18-135mm kit lens, I have a 28-105mm, and of course my 50mm (1.4 & 1.8).
I have not actually tried the 55-300m, but as I said I have the 55-200mm. I just assumed the 55-300mm. had the same feel & construction?? I want to do more wildlife shooting this summer and felt the 55-200mm just wasn’t getting me close enough.
The 70-300mm (105-450mm on a DX body) I think will really serve me well in so many ways. I have only two DX lenses (a 18-135mm & a 55-200mm) the rest of my lenses are full sensor lenses and I think I am going to keep heading in that direction. You just never know when a D700 might cross my path…lol?

I'm trying to decide between the two right now curt - I've been throwing around some ideas in my head. I actually forgot that the 70-300 would be 105-450 on a dx sensor. hrmmmm

Maybe this will help?
YouTube - Nikkor 70-300mm VR video review
From what I have heard the 70-300mm is the best bet. I have not tried the 55-300MM, but I have tried the 70-300mm and it is a very pro feeling lens.

I have this lens (70-300 VR) and you can see samples in my Gallery (dog park pics). It's sharp and fast and I strongly recommend it. I got to thinking that one day I might get to FX format... and I did.

Marcel, so you are happy with the 70-300mm mounted on your D7000?
I have mine coming tomorrow, can't wait to see how it performs with my D7000 & D200.

So Curt... is it there yet? Are you stuck to the window waiting for the delivery van ;-)
You will have a lot of fun with this lens, I even read a reviewer that preferred it to the 70-200 specially with the nice high iso D7000.
Can't wait to see the first pics.

Curt I replied to your thread a while ago

Overall I love it. I got a DIY table top "Studio" set up in the basement, that is where I use it the most. Can't see spending the extra money on another card just so I can shoot RAW, So I work around that and shoot JPG. I don't shoot RAW all the time, I know I should.
I do the same, mostly use the Eye-Fi around the home, I shot raw in slot one and JPG. in slot 2 on my trip.

I took this shot last year of a hawk that was 30 feet away with a D90 and a Nikkor 70-300mm 4-5.6. You're going to love the lens.
