That's a tripod collar. You connect the lens to your tripod using the foot on the bottom of the tripod collar to better manage the lenses center of gravity. Otherwise you'd have twelve pounds of glass hanging off the bayonet mount on your camera.Pardon my naive question but what is the apparatus hanging from the Nikon 70-200 2.8? It must have something to do with steadying the camera, huh.
It won't affect non-macro shooting; the Macro capability of the lens will simply be sitting there as an option you choose not to use.Thanks Fish- one more naive query- some of the 70-200 lenses are advertised as "Macro" others not.
