Heres the deal- I want to upgrade my 55-300 nikon lens. Dont 'think I can afford the 70-200 2.8 and would like to get a 200mm lens for under 900. I've been researching and now my head is just spinning. Can anyone recommend a lens that fit this criteria? Paul
I wouldn't be able to suggest anything that would be any kind of significant improvement over your current 55-300mm for that price range.

It's too bad you don't have a little more money to work with. A refurbished D7100 is $649.95 at Adorama, and a used Nikon 180mm f/2.8 AF-D lens can be bought for around $400. The D7100 would allow auto focusing with the AF-D lenses like the lens I mentioned. It's a very nice lens, too.

Bikerbrent; Wow that's very tempting. I spoke to my wife about it she said I should tell you to stay away from me!! But seriously, have owned this camera for less that 2 years and a very beginning photographer. I have not mastered the 3300 yet and want to do that before I move on.Please don't let my wife's lack of understanding prevent you from helping me out in the future- I value your opinion! Paul

Take a look at the Tamron 70-200 2.8. I was very impressed with the one I borrowed a couple months back. $475-$700. It's in the running as my next lens.

Frankly, I do not want to become the center of a family brawl! The camera and lenses you have are excellent to learn with. Actually, much better than the Argus C3 and Mamiya Sekor 500 SLR I learned on (and you don't have to spend lots of money on film and processing). Once you have truly mastered the D3300 and the lenses you have and honestly feel the equipment you own is actually holding you back, then is the time to consider something better. I kept my D200 for over 10 years before finally upgrading to the D7200 and I am still using lenses I bought in the 90's for my film SLR Nikons, so I don't go about upgrading on a whim.

My wife did ask where you live (she is Italian) but I told her I don't know. Anyways- your advice to me is always very helpful and THANK YOU, Paul

I am a long stone throw from San Diego in the Southwestern part of the U.S. and you are east of Buffalo, so I don't think we are in much danger of a physical conflict! Enjoy your camera, and learn well my friend. Tell your wife for me Mea culpa and hopefully she won't put out a hit on me.:encouragement:

Dave; I can't find one for 700- I want an internal focus motor and VR. Paul
There are two versions of the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens. One is the Di LD IF Macro, which will set you back a little less than $800. The other is the Di VC USD which costs about $1,400. The first is a very good lens with excellent optics but the spotty AF really hurts it. The Di VC USD is an absolutely superb lens; arguably one of the best 70-200mm's on the market at this time.

Ended up buying a 70-300 nikkor. Love it and it's much, much sharper than the 55-300 Nikkor which I sold on ebay for $170. I like this new(to me) lens a lot!! Paul
