Nifty fifty or a trusty thirty-five?

I have the 50mm and did look at the 35mm to compliment it, but I just couldn't justify the close focal length between the two.
I'm now looking at the 28mm f/1.8 instead as in my opinion it's a better seperation between the two.

If you've got the 35mm, then maybe look at the 85mm instead of the 50mm and see how that looks.

Another quick test you can do (if it's not already been mentioned), is put your 18-55mm lens on and focus at 35mm & 50mm to see what view you're getting.

The 85mm would not work for me. I'm usually in close proximity to the competitors on the mat during the matches. The 85 would end up being to long of a lens for me.

Gotta say, 50 takes a bit of times getting used to. Or I just tend to shoot in closer or much farther proximity.

On the sub-topic, kinda sounds like f/1.8 or f/2 50mm could do the trick for those sport shots indoors. Easier to adjust your position when you have room to move around.

My 35mm is outstanding for the events I attend. I just felt sometimes I was to close to the competitors. I purchased the 50 yesterday because it was on sale and I feel that it will give me that range I've been looking for.

I use a 50mm 1.8D on my D80. It's a great little lens and is suitable for a walk around lens for me. However, and let me throw a monkey wrench into all of this, i personally find a small tele more practical. One that i have had my eye on for a while, is the Tokina 28-70mm AT-X AF F2.8. The issue i have with the 50, is that i find myself having to move back often. I just find it more practical to have a small tele. Something like the Tokina i mentioned - just my thoughts - would be better suited.
