Amazing pics Rick...
am happy i got onto the photography bandwagon, some amazing scenes for the eyes :)

i have a question though, how would the tamron 10-24 compare against this?
also considering it to be almost half the cost?
am just peeping in to the world of wide angles, so don't know much yet

I have not shot with the Tamron, so I will not speak to it's image quality. For the most part, the three top rated Dx ultrawides are the Nikon 10-24, Tokina 11-16 and the Sigma 10-20. I went with the nikon for the following reasons:

-Image Quality
-Overall Range
-starts at 10mm, I want my UW to be as wide as possible
-Nikon brand, quality, resale value and quality control.

I would do a search of the two "vs" each other and all available user reviews.

for us newbies what does this lens do that cant be done with the 18-55 lens(nikon d3100)

Ultra wides offer a different perspective and the ability to get close to your subject. It is 8mm wider. Do a search in flickr of ultrwide images (or say the nikon 10-24) and you will see what you cannot do with the 18-55.

Yea, am leaning towards the Tokina 11-16 & the Nikon 10-24..
my only concern (as i just wrote in another thread) is if the new tokina with the inbuilt motor is as good as the old one or if there are any new issues.

but your pics are just awesome.. very very inspiring

Thanks, there is a new coating on the Tokina, it is a great lens, I just wanted more range when choosing between those 2.

ok i have been trying to look at the 10-24 picks on flickr. it looks as if the pics taken with this lens are sharp at all distances (dof).is that correct? or ?having a young family i dont get out to take some of the pics i want. so it leaves me limited in things to compare to.

There is a lot of DoF with ultrawides, you hit infinity sooner (that doesnt make sense I know :))
