I must be ahead of my time,because I made my own tether strap last year.Works well, too, and not difficult to make at all. Just requires some ingenuity and how-to skills to put it together. I include a photo of my own version of the tether strap on my Black Rapid.

Great minds Jack, we did ours too. Extends to the foot of the 70-200 2.8 when attached, not that I'm paranoid!!
I always attach my strap/monopod/tripod to the lens foot when I'm working with that big a lens.
While the lens mount of the D800 may be robust enough to handle it, some cameras' aren't and can be damaged by the load from such a lens. It may seem odd, but I've gotten used to it.
