My portrait shots went up a notch today

You will find the better you get the more there is to learn... like most things in life. Such a bitter irony, by the time we figure out what the freak we're doing we're just too old to do it. LOL

Putting it up on my big monitor confirms your analysis. I only ever use single focus, a throwback to my film days. I am liking the first photo better. It highlights her complexion better than the second one.

I have just noticed that my focus is not spot-on. I think it is me and not the lens.
If I remember correctly I was using 9 focus points instead of 1 and I think this may have caused the problem.
A closer look reveals that the hat brim is in focus while the eyes are slightly soft.
I don't think it is a front-focusing issue but I do need to determine what caused it.
In the meanwhile here is one photo processed two different ways. I like both.

I used to spend hours on a shot . I would look at it, stare at it. Make hundreds of minor adjustments until my eyeballs would pop out of it's socket. I could take a shot that I really liked and stare at it long enough to hate it by the time I got done with it.
The longer I process a shot the less I tend to like it.. What I'm trying to say, is that I only use single focus. The center one.:)

I like the first one. I guess I am to old school I am just not a fan of the high key shots. But that is just me and no indication of the quality of the shot.

My Neighbour agreed to sit for me for a range of portraits - different looks.

This is the first one.

Where's the pretty girl?

Only suggestion would be to bring the light around the front just a smidge more so that the nose shadow isn't as long going across and under his eye. Sharp looking model.

Am I the only one seeing a distinct green color-cast? I took the liberty of doing a Levels Adjustment and here's what I wound up with...

The original is on the left, my Q&D color-corrected version on the right:

yes it does have a distinct green colour cast - on purpose as I used a gradient map and this is the effect I wanted.
keep your eye out for the PINK one.
I have about 50 to process of him in a variety of kit. :)

I saw it as well, but I thought it was just a green background. I was going to ask why @Lawrence chose a green background, but I figured it's a matter of taste and did not comment on it. Now that I look more closely I can see that it is a WB issue and not an artistic statement.

Wrong! :)
I was fooling around with selections and then filled thebackground and finally used a gradient map - all just for the hell of it.

Coincidentally he left me a message on FB last night that a friend had seen the photo, shown it to his art director and as aresult he landed a small part in a local video shoot! So i guess that either makes me an agent or a talent spotter.

I wonder what the pay is like ...
