This past weekend was the last Superbike Race in Canada at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. A new experience for me thanks to a fellow photographer and friend who invited me for the weekend.
On the Friday, I learned that working media gets special photographic privileges so I applied for the permit and got in. (I have Nikon NPS status, work as a pro, and I have started publishing an eMagazine called "PlanetNikon Photographer", you can download it free on Facebook and have a look at the first issue. pdf format. Join the Group first.)
They indoctrinate you first, take safety and dangers, do's and don't do's. Very enlightening. With a vest, you get to go pretty much anywhere in the park right up to the concrete guard wall by the track. A photographer I met there was almost flattened by a car on one of the turns last year, I was told. So, I chose to stand where inertia would not sent any motorcycles towards me in the event of a mishap. Only two crashes on the course, not really sure how badly off the injured riders were, but it wasn't good from what I heard.
Over all, a simply wonderful weekend. I enjoyed every aspect of this and I think I am very badly HOOKED!
Here is the rub .... I shot these with my D800 and Nikkor 200-400mm f4G VR, hand held!
AF-C worked like a charm.
These guys were going some 140 mph as they zoomed by, I tracked and shot without issue! The D800 is supposed to be a studio camera, but as you can tell, it did pretty good on the track!
Enjoy the images....
Jordan Szoke, bike #1, was the Champion... 13th year win in a row! Weekend was a double header, he won both races, the last one... just barely.
