Most Important Facility

This is a shot of a very important facility in the State of Alaska. Only in south and south east Alaska is there running water to houses or sewer lines. It just gets too cold. Permafrost dosen't allow for underground water lines or sewer lines. So the next best thing is the old fashion out house. Can you imagine using this when it's 20 to 30 degrees below zero.

Amazingly when it's that cold, the smell isn't so bad (or the smeller just freezes up)

Joseph, I don't get it. Do you mean they don't have water wells? When I visited my brother in Anchorage, they had running water.

I've been to hunting camps in the hills of Virginia that still have outhouses, and the running water was hand pumped from a nearby stream up to the cabin.

Watch out for the little splinters of wood that could transfer from the seat to your seat. Having those slivers rub on the under wear would not be very comfy.

Helene, Anchorage is actually in south Alaska and they don't get the severe cold and permafrost that central and north Alaska does. By the time you get to Fairbanks having running water and a sewer system in your home is the exception and a luxury that many people cannot afford. Also the most common home heating device in all of Alaska is the wood stove.
