Day 11 - Storm

Went out for a near midnight picture of the mountains as a cold front and winter storm arrived. Unfortunately, the storm arrived quicker than I did at my shooting location as I caught the storm slamming into the Wasatch Front mountains here in the Rockies. Behind those clouds dumping snow is a mountain that goes up one mile (1.6 km) to a total elevation of just shy of 10,000 feet (3 km).

That would have been amazing...

I used a cotton ball and just the right amount alcohol dampness. Too wet with alcohol and it won't light/stay lit. However, I have never lit superglue; will have to play with that.

Lol, I thought it was cake/ice cream/pudding.....

Day 12 - 7500+ Miles and still going!

I was outside giving my mountain bike a little loving care and maintenance tonight when I decided to look at the odometer. This bike and myself have been racing in Europe, the United States, and two 24 hour mountain bike races. We have retired from racing three times now. To say the least, we both have the dings and scars to show for it. Most of the bike is still the original components or early-on upgrades. And later this summer, we will race one more 24 hour race because were both stupid aaaannnd we will probably retire again. So as I said, I was looking at the odometer for the first time in a few years and found I was just about to tick over 7,500 miles recorded plus about two years of racing that are not included on this computer (previous computer died due to a river crossing during a race in Germany). This gave me an idea to shoot this specific part of the bike as it is most likely the single most worked part on the bike; the rear gears, chain, and derailleur. Nothing spectacular, but together we have been through hell and back and a few beers - the beers were a race in Germany where at the check-in points they gave you BEER! What a race, what a country!

Day 13 - Frog

Staying with the mountain bike stuff; here is my riding partner. This little blue frog was given to me by my daughter about 14 years ago right before my first race. It's rode there in that pocket ever since and has never missed a race.

Day 14 - Tamron 500mm

Ok, back to taking real pictures now that I had a little bit of time. Tried out our new Tamron 200-500mm lens on the D7100. Understanding this is not a high end pro lens, but a lens that is affordable and I have to say I am pretty impressed. Of course I did do some sharpening in post and the general stuff that we do with a photo.

Here's the stats. Haven't played with the lens to know its sweet spot yet.
D7100
ISO 200
1/1600
f/7.1
Distance 4.5 miles and 1 mile up. No cropping.

Wow, that's great and that is a tamron 200-500, need to check this lens out. Thanks.

Everything I'm shooting is at the limit of the lens. And it is noted that on this lens after 400mm the lens gets soft. However, if I'm buying a lens like this I want to use it at that range so everything I have posted is with a heavy sharpening and then just normal processing. Chromatic aberrations have been manageable in the raw editor as well as the heavy sharpening. I have also noticed that distant objects like the moon... not so good. I can pull better with my 55-300mm and crop down. However, a buffalo in the distance, or a mountain goat, anything that the zoom can pull in and fill the frame seems to be acceptable and usable. Once I get a bit of time I will probably do a write up review on what I have found, how to use it, and when to look elsewhere.

Day 15 Full Moon

A student at school asked me for a photograph of the moon from tonight for his science report. Horrible shooting conditions with haze in the air so it took down the sharpness, but I managed to get the shot.
