Pat, I should clarify. Since LR's editing is non-destructive, it doesn't change your original image UNTIL you tell it to write any metadata changes. (See screenshot for specific command.) In the case of a NEF you will then have a XMP file.

My understanding is that regardless of the RAW file type you don't get the XMP sidecar file unless you explicitly ask for one. All adjustments are stored in the Lightroom database regardless.
