500mm is as close as i would want to get to a loon. i have fished in canada with these guys very close to the boat, i felt very uncomfortable, big bird and a sharp beak.
Loons are one of my favorite subjects to photograph. I make a little blind on the shore in the bush, and just sit for hours watching them, waiting for them to come check me out.
