Snow White
Say no more that says it all!
Again no offence, but your alleged position has you seeing not past your nose. People that are in one position for a long time are OFTEN behind the times. Case in point your thinking 35mm is huge. You probably haven't noticed, but Kodak hasn't made a profit since 2007 and went bankrupt in 2012. If it wasn't for selling off their patents Kodak would have ceased to exist a lot earlier. "Hasn't diminished the number of people that shoot on film"?! WOW are you ever off there! I submit your alleged college is an anomaly. My son is going to FSU right now and it's the other way around. FSU can't fill their "conventional" classes and in fact were forced to change the curriculum. The students complained they couldn't buy film much less get it developed. That not only applies to students, but everybody! I can see I'm trying to drag somebody into the present that wants to stay in the past. That's ok it takes all kinds. Good luck renting a video for your VHS player!
You keep saying "no offense", and yet continue with the personal jabs.
1. We're all aware of what happened to Kodak and why, and you may not be able to get Kodachorme developed, but there are still places that develop film and sell developing equipment. I know quite a few proficient "digital photographers" who use film every now and then because they like the "feel of it."
2. These guys you're referencing in your comments are very knowledgeable in today's technology . . . if you bothered to read any of their helpful posts. Just because someone values past technology, does not mean they're stuck in the past.
3. I'm not afraid or ashamed to admit that I learned photography in the film days, but I was also right there when it went digital. I'll match my technological and post processing skills against any of the nouveau digital photographers . . . and I don't use a menu-driven consumer camera.
4. I refuse to have a refrigerator with an automatic icemaker. I also wear boots when I hike for common sense reasons. I don't know how to make fire without matches, so I guess I'll have to make sure I always have a supply of matches (or a lighter with plenty of fuel) I can see a lot of value in having the Katzeneye screen available . . . good for somebody for having the good sense to NOT throw away something that worked in the past. I also have all my favorite vinyl LP's and have digitized some of them to use on my ipad and iphone.
We live in such a "throw away" world . . . things, pets, people. I mention the last two because it is a state of mind . . . it's old and useless, get rid of it and replace with the new.
What we are today in terms of photography was built on film photography, and I will still develop a roll of film periodically to keep that industry as alive as possible, not because I'm "stuck in the past", but because it's a debt owed.
Besides that, when a solar flare wipes out the whole communications grid and destroys "digital" (or the zombie apocolypse comes along, or some other catastrophe), I'll still be able to make photos because I can use film and development solution.
