Righto, done some changes today.
1- moved the top light towards the front of the box.
2- moved the RH light up about an inch.
3- lined the box with aluminium foil.

Here are some test pics.... they are all straight out of the camera, untouched. ( except to resize so they will upload here )
All are 100 ISO , white balance was the same for all, using the reading I took yesterday.

First 3 are using the kit lens, 18-55mm @55mm with UV filter. F16.

Next 3 are 55mm macro lens with UV filter. f16.

View attachment 16079 View attachment 16080 View attachment 16081

Next lot are 55mm macro lens with circular polarizer. f16

Edit ::: just noticed the first pic in the first series has the pen rolled slightly compared to the other 2 series, so it looks a bit different.

I think the box is doing good now...what about you sir? Is this the new set up? Now I may have to build me one. :)

The macro is much better IMO and I like it without the polarizer...

I like Parker Jotters BTW sir. Greatest pen ever made if you ask me. I used to have a few of them but I only have three now. Two of them are black and I use them all of the time and one is an old white one with arabic writing on it from the Dubai Petroleum Company it is my collector pen. Someday I am hoping to sell it on Ebay to some rich dude in Dubai that works for the national oil company for like a thousand dollars or something...LOL :)

Thanks for the feedback Jeff.
I havent changed anything on the box since that series of photos were taken.
I think I will probably redo the alfoil job, as my spray glue was buggered, and was only comes out in weak spurts, so the alfoil is falling off already.

Yeah I think the polariser is gone.

So you think the Macro lens shots are the better ones ?
It seems to be a bit easier to get the focus right with the macro, on the 18-55, the focus ring barely needs to move and its out of focus.

Yes the macros appear sharper at least to my eye and also just a touch brighter which is nice.

I think I would thumbtack the foil on myself. You might even try just painting the inside of the box white.

I just rechecked the comparison series of pics, looking at the centre photos ( the Mackay Cedar Sierra Ballpoint )
To my eyes, the Macro photo looks superior.

I didn't mention in the posts, but the 2 later lots of photos, the Paua Sierra ballpoint, and the bolt action pen, were both taken with the 18-55mm.
I am not unhappy with the results I can get with that lens, in fact with the zoom, its a bit easier to fit the pen to the frame, where as with the 55mm macro, I need to move the tripod in or out to suit ( or up and down).
But the thing I like about the macro lens is the focus adjustment ring needs to be turned a lot more in or out to get the focus just right, like about 1/4" to 1/2" of turning movement compared to about 1/16" to 1/8" on the zoom lens.

I am still not 100% sure I am getting the focus as good as I could get it. I have given up trying to use live-view, the pixelated screen on the D3100 is just too vague for me.
Even looking through the viewfinder I always wonder if I am getting it right. My eyes are getting to the stage where I have to wear 2x glasses to read, and I have been looking through the viewfinder with them on, because I cant see the detail well enough without them.
I havent tried adjusting the little diopter dial on the side of the viewfinder yet, maybe I should give that a go.

Just got a catalog yesterday with the bolt action. I was going to ask if you've seen them, but I guess you have.

Great work!

Thanks Marilynne, one of the suppliers here in Australia has just got them in, so I got a few to try.

Not sure if you can notice on the catalog pics, but they come with the bolt facing up the wrong way compared to what it is on a real gun, if you look at mine the bolt is orientated as it should be.
There is a Guy in New Zealand that posted on our pen turning forum about a mod he came up with for a fix.

If you want I can give you a link to his thread, it will explain it better than I probably can.

My husband noticed the bolt action was on the wrong side in the catalog. I did notice it was correct on your pens. Did I ever mention I use to shoot expert with a bolt action rifle? Once again, great job!

Marilynne, here is the link PSI Bolt Action modified

They are in the process of doing a major upgrade of the forum, the thumbnails aren't working yet, so you have to click on the links to see the pics.
Its a bit of a pain, but they are working around the clock to try and iron out all the faults.
The pics are sitting at the highest priority now, so hopefully wont be long for a fix.

I did see somewhere that you used to shoot. Thats why I thought you would probably have noticed the fault if the catalog photos showed a good view of it.

I can't imagine how they got it so wrong, they probably got thousands of them made in the first batch, so have to sell all them to get the next batch made.
You would think someone would have realised before they went into production.

The person that designed it was left handed!

Parker made some good pens alright. You never know your luck, maybe one day that pen will fetch a good price.

I sell Parkers in my shop, mostly the lower priced ones. My pens outsell them though, they sit on the same shelf.

What kind of shop do you have?

I havent made any new pens lately, so here a couple of pics from The Mackay Botanical Gardens.
I stopped off there to take some photos of the Magpie Geese, but due to it being school holidays, and plenty of kids chasing them around, I couldnt get anywhere near them.
So no geese pics :(
