Historic sites

I am wondering how many of us like to visit historical sites. I enjoy learning about places and people who helped shape our world. So if you have some shots from historic places please share them here with a little info about them. I will start with The Hans Herr house in Lancaster County PA. This house was built circa 1719. The Herr's were part of the first group of families to settle in Lancaster. Eight families bought 10000 acres from the Penn family. My wife is decedent from two of these families.

Gettysburg Civil War Battlefield. Gettysburg was fought July 1-3 1863. Ironic how Lee's army began it's retreat south on July 4th, and many of their Fathers and Grandfathers had fought for the Revolution.

Alan, is your wife a descendant of William Penn? If so, have you visited Pennsbury Manor? It was William Penn's home at one time.

Oh...sorry! Then I misunderstood what you wrote. When I read "Penn" I thought you meant your wife was related to William Penn. Oops! :eek:

No problem. A little aside Penn would only sell 10000 acres at a time because he wanted to have communities settled. At the time what is now Lancaster County was in Indian territory.

Very interesting! This whole area around here was also Indian territory--Lenape Indians. Part of this area is near the Delaware River so that was important to the Indians. In fact, the photo above of Pennsbury Manor, if you were to see what was behind me, it was the river. Anyway...good luck with identifying historic places to visit. There are so many!

South Carolina's upstate Landsford Canal opened in 1823, engineered to carry boats two miles around rocky shoals in the Catawba River. It had five locks in its length. Here's the first, the Guardlock. It was engineered to protect the canal when river water levels became high, but was otherwise left open. The canal failed to prosper and was closed by 1840. You can see the Catawba River in the distance. [D5100]

Looks little more than a ditch. Makes one wonder how deep the water was when it was operational.

It was 12 Feet Wide and 10 Feet Deep, so was quite the feat when it was completed. There's a hiking trail along its length and you can easily see the route, but as you saw, nature has filled much of it in.
