My college student daughter always has the latest Adobe products, whether she knows it or not.

So what do they ask when you register a product for a student or a professor. My daughter is a teacher and I was always wondering what the actual procedure is to start using Adobe's educational products.

My wife is a teacher and I buy educational copies all the time. Normally you have to send documentation to the dealer showing that you are a teacher / student. With my wife we have to send in a pay stub with $ parts blacked out. Some need Student / Teacher Id if the school issues one. From what I have dealt with most are pretty picky to make sure you qualify for the discount. I got Windows 7 Pro for $60 and MS Office Pro 2007 licensed to 2 computers for $105.

It is the only way to buy software if you can. Not sure how it works in Canada but I would assume it is about the same.

Send to dealer when you buy. Then you get a serial number just like any other retail buy. I don't think Adobe even knows when you register it. Just from the sale. Some of the boxes will say Student/Teacher edition but they are full retail editions.

With Amazon you can buy it but need to go through a 3rd party verification system for license activation. Pay stub works, as does an active ID from the school. It just needs to be on their list of qualifying institutions. Here's the link for the Student/Teacher software. Activation info is in the FAQ somewhere. CS6 is under $300.

There is also the option to lease via the adobe cloud.

I know that this is the way that most software companies are pushing us to go these days but I am just not comfortable not having my software on my computer. I guess that comes from having computers in my home for 30 plus years and having a degree in computer programing. Just old fashioned.

We're not as lucky here in the UK - most educational licenses are not as easy to get hold of, but when they are, can be as easy as having an email address which belongs to an educational establishment.

Lucky for me too(?) my wife is a teacher, so if I ever need to, I can use her work email address to register stuff.

MS products are a different ball game though, I get those pretty cheap through something called MS Action Pack, which among other things includes (on the last version I got), 10 licenses for Win7 Pro and Office 2010 Pro (incl Project & Visio), Server 2008 R2, Exchange 2010, and some other stuff too, all for the grand price of £240.
If you only take the Win7 & Office products as 'useful' its still not bad paying £24 for both (~$36)

Oh the joys of working in IT and knowing these little gems :)

There are other (LEGAL) ways of getting various products and using them, but does involve a bit of know how :)
(Virtual machines is all I'm gonna say on that)

If you register for the cloud service they could ask for a copy of employment offer on headed paper or a payslip with details of salary blanked out. My sons partner is a teacher and wants an intro to CS6 or Lightroom. To make sure I'm prepared for the request I registered for her in her name and was even good enough to install it on my PC so it's ready when she visits. I have even spent a lot of time learning the products for her so I'm fully up to speed for her questions.

I must admit I don't know why they don't have a home licence available. I think a lot of amateurs would buy if rent if it was affordable.

With regards to the cloud service, the software is installed on the PC not in the cloud. You just download from the cloud and it verifies you are allowed to do so. It means you can always have the latest versions. For example, if I wasn't helping my sons partner out I wouldn't have the camera raw version that supports my D800!!!

All I did was got my daughter, whose at Uni, to send Adobe a copy of her student ID, using her student email address which ends in .edu.au here. Received the activation code within 24 hours.
