This is a very unusual shot and was taken a long distance at 600mm with my camera in DX mode giving it the 35mm effect with the crop factor of 900mm. The pole was far away and up high with the sky and clouds in the background along with another egret.

This was taken with my Tamron 150-600mm at 600mm and I believe it was in DX mode on my D600 effectively stepping it up to 900mm I need to try shooting at maybe a Fstop of F8 or F11 instead of wide open at F6.3 and use my tripod to see what this lens can really produce.

I'm confused (as always) by your approach of shooting in DX mode. While you might extend the reach of your lens, aren't you cutting your resolution down from 24 to about 10MP? Couldn't you accomplish the same thing by shooting normal mode and cropping?

Yes you can do that but sometimes I shoot in DX mode so I can get a close enough view of the subject to see if their eyes are open or shut and other details that I might miss by waiting to see what I have by looking later in the computer.

I would like to add that if you shoot in full frame and have to crop half or two thirds of the picture to get what you need, after cropping, you are loosing a bunch of your file that way also. You no longer have a 24 meg file after you do the cropping. Different situations call for different techniques just as you don't shoot everything with the same focal length lens.

Great capture and not a lot wrong with the D90

The Nikon D90 is not one of the most expensive cameras I have ever owned but I would rate it as one of the best. The D90 is a VERY GOOD camera in my opinion and consistently produced great images for me.

Portrait of a Brown Pelican. This was taken with the Tamron at 600mm in DX mode for the 35mm equivalent of 900mm. It way waaaay out in the water. Shot handheld.

Thanks Pat, I am really liking this lens. I especially like the fact that I can handhold it . I have a tripod but enjoy the freedom I have with this lens on not having to use it.

I have been pleased too and so far all has been handheld also... I will probably do better after taking the "Grampa School of Dr Doolittle!" :)

I have a monopod I am going to try with it one of these times out... Biggest issue is when I am shooting upward and I try and brace on something near by.
