Frame or not to frame

What do yo think. Framing photos or not? I saw many framed photos on this board. They look great. So I thought I give it a try too.

Do you think framing photos looks better?

Your frame helps define your space Michael. But it is often necessary to put a mat surrounding your print to separate it from the frame. I like my mats to pick up some subtle color that appears in the photo and the frame must have a complimentary color or be in keeping with the decor of the room in which it will hang. Of course I always give black and white photos a white mat. The other thing that a mat does is isolate the print from it's immediate surroundings and raw your eye into the center of the space. It might help if you have a museum near you which has an exhibit of photos to get a sense of how they deal with presentation. We here are lucky enough to have the Carnegie Museum and the famed Frick Museum near us. Their presentation of photos have helped me immensely.
Their is a growing trend to present photos printed on metal, canvas or even wood with no frame at all. that can be effective in certain instances, but I think, not always.

I always use the drop shadow mat like that. I like it. I think it separates the photo from the page and make it stand out from the other photos. Do I like the grey and the writing on the border? Not so much. It draws the attention away from the photo. I used to do it that way all the time till I took a hard look at it. I like the plain white with the drop shadow and my copyright on the photo.

It depends on the frame. I like some frames around here, and some I don't. It's like with anything. If you do it with taste ,it will be fine. Over doing anything makes it worse.

candy-school-FrameShop_3.jpgcandy-school-FrameShop_3-001.jpgi did this in picasa, one thing i do not like in picasa is the color selection. Pink was ok blue needs work. I like a white mat, for the internet i think the small black frame helps define the mat.

Most frames enhance a picture i just feel you need to be careful not to choose anything to bold in color that can fight for the viewers attention.
