Had a blast today with the almost 70 degree weather in DC for the Cherry Blossom Festivus. Too bad there were like, 2 million people at every turn. I just took my 50mm and had no regard for other lenses today. I knew what I wanted going in and didn't think that any other focal length would have been beneficial. In hindsight, I was half right. I didn't NEED my 35, but it would have been nice inside the metro station for some shots I thought of. No matter, you ready for all the pics?

I was trying to get the hyperfocal distance dialed in on the last shot but I'm still struggling with it to be honest. It's confusing to try and guess where your focus point should be, measuring in feet with your brain when shooting.

Love the cherry blossoms but their pollen is a killer on my allergies. At least looking at a photo does not make me sneeze & wheeze.

What really amazes me is that I cropped all of the photos a severe amount on top of sharpening all the raw files and doing all the fun things we do in post. Here is the amazing crop from 'caps12' from this image:

Now, on FX, this wouldn't be as terrible, but the 16-85 is truly a great lens on DX! Not ideal for low-light action sports, but still.. I wasn't expecting it to perform quite as well as it did given the settings/camera I was using. Most of these were shot at ISO 1250 or 1600, f5.6 as well. Nice.

DoF is not only a function of aperture size but also a function of the distance you are from your subject. I suspect this may have been too close to the subject to capture both eyes and cheeks sharply.

Yea, come to think of it, it was very close. Good point. I was pretty much less than arms length, just snapping random stuff, making faces. With a 50 on a crop, no less..

50 is not a head and shoulders rig IMO...maybe half portraits...I would like to have an old 50/2 non Ai converted for this purpose myself.
