I recently learned about "Lay Flat" Photography were, you guessed it, things are laid out flat and you photograph them shooting straight down. From what I read, the objects should be aligned along horizontal and vertical lines. This is probably all old news to you guys, but I only just heard about it!

After watching a couple of vids on technique and composition, I decided to try a nifty variation. I like how it came out, but I'm not sure if I prefer the landscape or portrait orientation. I'll put both up here, with a third shot showing how I did it.

I have to admit, I'm finding this new layout a bit of a challenge so I find I'm spending less time here now than I used to. I did start up a Vero account, and have been spending some time seeing what that's all about. It is decidedly less social than an actual forum like this, but the flip side is it's super easy to work as far as posting one's own photos (drag and drop, woo hoo!) and looking at others' works. I was never on Instagram, but comments I've seen liken Vero to Instagram's early days before ads and popular photos were pushed to the top.

I do find it rather stale emotionally, with little engagement other than "Likes" and the briefest of comments, so I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to remain active there. But for the moment it's nice to see a large pool of new photos every day that one can filter into one's particular interest(s).

I've been taking part in some of their challenges also, so that's been good as far as the hobby goes. Right now I'm part of a "November Create" challenge, similar to our Weekly Challenge except that this is daily (the topic is posted in the morning) and there are no winners. Just participants.

Here's a shot I took for yesterday's challenge, "Mug or mugs". I captioned it, "Guess which one my kid sister gave me?":

Hi Dangerspouse - I am finding the new layout as easy or easier as far as posting shots. It could be my imagination, but they seem to display more clearly in my desktop monitor and my phones browser. Not to mention not having to display the site as a desktop site on my phone.

The shock of the crash was very hard on the "flow" of the forum. The highly customized nature of the old site was something the users got used to. This layout is less customized but is and will be very functional, we just have to get on with it.

The long delay on the current challenge seems long but the challenge team wants to really get it "right" so that's a strong plus.

Good to see you posting here again, hang in there and figure things out. I am supper hopeful Nikonites transitions well into the new site. The people here make the site for sure.

All the best

To @Dangerspouse and anyone else having trouble navigating the forum, would you consider please listing the issues you are having. Most likely the majority of issues will be learning to navigate where everything is. Some will have trouble understanding how to upload images.

Would it help if I created a tutorial with screenshots on how to do things and where to access specific features such as where to upload your avatar, how to find new posts, how to subscribe to threads, etc?

Lol. I'm not having issues really, nor am I at all dismissive at the great (and amazingly fast!) job done to get what is obviously a very functional website up and running. It's just that I'm pretty much computer illiterate, so any change seems to take me longer than most I think.

An FAQ might be helpful. It would be nice to learn how I could configure my settings to tailor stuff like Alerts, etc.

Seriously, you guys did an incredible job building this up from wholecloth. Any frustrations I'm having is a result of my own inadequacies, not yours :)

ps. Anyone like my Still Life with Mugs picture? I'm really liking my new strobe/octobox setup, and it's getting easier to get results I'm looking for now that I've had some practice. I still like my continuous light soft boxes, but there are times when the amount of light a 400 watt strobe throws can be a real advantage. It can be a bit tricky directing that light, and controlling spill and reflections, but when you get it right it opens up more possibilities.

Yes I should have mentioned your photo at least a little  - I have been impressed with the strobe shots you are doing. The crisp foreground effect with the black background is very cool for this subject and others you have done since getting the strobe.

Hey thanks for that, Bill. I appreciate it. And I agree with your previous comment regarding the forum, and its members. The people here are what really make this site worthwhile, and I'm sure once I'm up to speed on the tech aspects I'll be able to engage more frequently again with all the individuals that I like so much.
