I have experienced similar situations that required using ISO 4000 even with a single SB900 since the venues are just too dark. shooting anything less will give you a much darker background.

They don't allow flash photography during their productions. :( Believe me, with a black curtain as the background, it was a very dark scene to capture. Fortunately the photos are okay but not as good as they would have been with spotlights. ;)

That would have been a more challenging scene and where a f1.4 lens would come in handy.

Noise reduction software can always help out to make it more decent or acceptable.

Technology will continue to improve. Therefore it is inevitable that newer models will perform better. But if today we are wow by D4s, do you really need D1?

The he answer will depend on the individual and their purpose. Of course if you have D1, it does not automatically turns you into a pro either. Haha
