All of the above and then some. :)

Outdoors mostly and trying to get insects but also using flowers to see what I am doing wrong. Any bit of wind and the shot is impossible.

Yesterday I was using a flash and found that there was a delay between pressing the shutter and the flash firing. No idea why that happened.

Not sure why the flash would delay unless the sync timing settings is off?? I do agree that wind or any possible movement can instantly ruin the shot. Even the mirror flap can be a problem it seems. I'll be trying to shoot with mirror locked up next time to see if that works. Then it'll be on to trying to increase shutter speed and increasing lighting to get the same or even better results. Certainly a lot going on for a single pic, but the results can be worth it when done right.

My flash takes a little time between shots to "charge", so it doesn't always fire. As David said you do have to have the sync speed set in your menu (IIRC). I know with my flash on longer shutter speeds the flash goes off at the end of the exposure not at the start. Not sure if any of that is relevant. The bugger of it all is you are limited to 1/250 or 1/320 unless you have a High Speed Shutter flash which I believe some of those ring flashes are. So most of mine are done at ISO 400, 1/320 and whatever f stop I can use to get a good exposure. In full sun that can be f8 upwards.

Pulled a 14 hr day today and had time for one shot today. (Accidentally posted in my drop zone thread last night.)

Thanks, guys. Pulled up next to a row of bushes that were swarmed with at least a hundred robins all getting their fill. Probably took too many shots, but did get a few decent ones.

Pete; I'm super happy with the Tokina 400! It's miles ahead of the Sigma 500 that I had. It focuses faster, and is much sharper wide open.

How did you get that flat falling drop David?

To be honest; I wish I knew, so that I could repeat it!! I took about 500 shots yesterday in an attempt to catch a second drop hitting the first as it rose up out of the water. This shot and the first in my Dropbox post are the closest I was able to achieve. Without a high speed sync system this is soooooooo much harder than I could have dreamed. I never could come up with a way to time the two drops falling correctly when doing it by hand.
