I like these clouds and the wind generators along the landscape, however I think I learned something. I knew at 11mm there would be some lens distortion, but I figured I would be able to correct it. The software that I have available to do it when it is this extreme is RawTherapee. It corrects it, but I lose a good portion of the bottom of the shot. Think of only the top 1/3 of the wind generators showing and no mountains except on the far right. OK, what have I learned? Next time encompass more at the bottom of the shot when composing, so there is something to lose without losing the ground/mountain perspective of the shot.

Any other software available that will correct the distortion without losing the bottom of the shot?

Walt, try in camera distortion control. I don't know if it will help, but you never know. Retouch menu or page 285 of the D7100 User's Manual.

A couple of shots using the 200-500mm
It can be kind of tough swinging that big thing around to get a bird-in-flight. Ha!

And then it worked pretty well to get a little bitty weed flower. A hold out or late bloomer. Ha!

The Sandhill Cranes are back in town.

Good shooting Walt. We had no Sandhill Crane migration this year. Normally they come by the thousands, but this year it was just a few straggles.

You could always fly east a little and get out of Cali.................. The sandhill cranes are just arriving, but should be here into March of next year. They are sure noisy when they get up and at it in the mornings. Ha! Once they get started, I have them all around me usually depending on what crops are close by.

i am going on my first field trip of this year (winter) tomorrow Walt with the San Bernardino Valley Audubon Society, 2 off their trips goes to the Salton sea and the cranes are there, i just missed the trip last year, all ready for it come January 2017, i did think of going there in the summer, but its hot and i didnt know where to find them, so i had to wait. I plan on going on as many trip as i can (or the wife allows me) with them this year. the way i look at it is, they know all the good spots to find the birds, i will try and take some pictures?

I guess I am blessed that they come to me. I don't have to leave the place. These were taken on my daily walk around the property with the dog.

Hawk about 100 miles away.

Was out in no where land for about 10 days (no phone, no internet, no... anyway it was nice.) A fire almost every night that was started using primitive means to get it going. Either a Fire Bow Drill or Flint and Steel were the two main methods. Here is a collage of my brother using the Bow Drill operation. Yes, the shots were taken on two different occasions and I didn't completely get the results I was looking for in the first of the series. All materials used were collected from the immediate area. The first shot I wanted some blurring of the Bow Drill in operation, but I ended up with way too much. Maybe next time. Ha!

Today I had my first opportunity to try out the TC14E II convertor with the 200-500 lens. I went to a "Lake" (that is what the town calls it). It is a big puddle next to a golf course. Ha! It does attract some birds and was a good place to go for the test.

While at the "Lake" I saw this train passing in the far distance so tested the lens-convertor combination.
