No. I was pretty busy slapping the gnats, helping my daughter, and trying to figure out the basics to do an HDR. I should have. Is that what would have given me a clear image of the milky way?
That is the secret sauce. 60 to 100 images will work well. Look up Autostacker or Sequitor (spelling?) Depending on Mac or PC. And try to take a couple with your landscape exposed the way you like so you can layer that on top after the main process. You can ignore star trails for that one.

Ps: Milky way core is best in July.

If I go out to the beach here in July, I'd have to bring a baseball bat to keep the mosquitoes and gnats from making off with my gear.

Seriously, I found the exercise interesting, but I think I'll stick with macro and birds. If I didn't have to drive an hour to the beach and then hike a mile or so to the beach, I might be willing to try some more, but I get a whole lot more from a sunrise trip to the beach with trees in the surf. In fact the Pup talked me into going tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the advise and help.

Stacking helps.
If I read your EXIF correctly, you made a 1 sec exposure. Is that right? If so, you could have exposed for a much longer time using a 24mm on a full frame camera.
