First shots with the Nikkor 105mm Macro. Not to impressive. Either I need a lot of work or my camera just isn't able to capture sharp pics.

Hi Chris, don't get discouraged. I think your shots are great and they just need sharpening. Here's what I was able to do with one of them:

I'm not sure, but I think that if you keep your images full size when you upload, the uploader might compress them too much and reduce the quality. I always downsize my images to about 1000x1000 at 72 dpi before I upload.
Were these shot RAW? If yes, then you need to sharpen absolutely because for this forum you'll have to downsize.
You have the right equipment to do a great job, you'll just have to work a little but the result will be worth it. ;-) Take care.

Oh and Chris, crank up your ISOs on the D700. For close-ups you'll want all the speed you can get. And don't worry, it won't hurt the quality. Between 400 and 1600 is what I use for close-ups.

We are under a "very rare" tornado watch. Interesting weather this year.

I am headed to Bar Harbor, but taking a laptop. Hoping for an internet connection. If I don't get one, I will post my daily's next week.

Chris....all great shots, in my opinion. About the macros......you used 1/400 shutter speed? Why so fast? Give 1/250 a try with that new lens, and yes, bump up the ISO, too, like Marcel said. Should make a big difference.

Chris, did you use a tripod? when I was shopping for a macro, I rented the 105 and found that it was a little "temperamental". It takes quite a bit to get used to the feel of it. I don't do that much macro, so I'm happy with the 60mm. For first time use, the shots are great.

Nice shot Chris, so quiet and calm. I like the reflections on the water and the overall color scheme. Is it raining there too? It's still raining here. :-(
