Just received the D800 in the mail today. Overall it feels better in my hands then the 5D does. Build quality is just phenomenal, the knobs and switches all seem like they're much stronger than on the 5D.

Congrats on your new camera. In my experience, the D800 can be used in sports application with lower burst rate as already identified. Your success rate will vary based on your experience, technique, AF and SS settings that you use.

The only thing I dont like is there is no exposure meter for live view movie mode. this is very bad, is there a fix for this?

Try pressing the okay button while in live view mode. If you then press info two times you'll get the histogram as well.

Edit - here's a video:

Welcome to Nikonites, Faymus. Just to rain on your parade, Popular Photography, a magazine I haven't purchased in Decades because of its IN DEPTH and UNBIASED opinions, rated the DIII the BEST CAMERA of the year over the D800. So there.....

I jumped onto the D800 band wagon very, very early and have not regretted my purchase. It is a simply amazing camera. Loaded with features and the images just rock. I think you will be amazed!

Congratulations and all the best in the process.

PS: The reason they gave for rating it better than the D800 was that C@nun paid more advertising money.....

Thanks but this only works in live view for pictures. Movie mode has no meter. Still trying to find an answer.

That was hilarious LOL. 5D mark III is a good all around camera but canon must have paid somebody because the D800/D800E is a far superior camera in my opinion.

You should have seen my jaw when I saw that tripe on the cover. Seriously, I would be ashamed of myself if I was them! For either being really really stupid and actually believing it, or for being "bought" by their advertiser. Pathetic publication.

How do I increase image preview time? After i take a picture it disappears after a few seconds. It also disappears after a few seconds when I press play. How do i get the images to stay on the screen longer than 3-4 seconds?

Go to the Custom shooting menu, C4(Monitor off delay --> playback ---> choose 10s or 20s ---> ok.

Thanks buddy! Worked like a champ! I am such a Nikon noob hahaha!

Update: after shooting for 4 days on the d800 I am in love with it! Words can't express how badass this camera is. I am buying it or the d800e immediately if I can.

what I love is that I took a photo of the house across the street with a 85mm and when I zoomed in 400% I could read the license plate on the car I could see inside the front window and the quality was still better than most cameras I have shot on at full image. I am at a loss for words.

nikon is kicking the competition in the teeth right now! I am glad I tried it! Now it's time to get it and start saving for the d4!!

Also alot of my photos I took yesterday looked back focused. I spot focused on the eye but it seemed to have focused about an inch further away and the kneck and cheeks were in focus. I had AF micro adjustment to +1 is this why?

A good way to check if your camera or lens has AF issue is to view your jpg results on your computer monitor. Compare the images and make sure you note the settings that you use when using Auto fine tune.

So when I +1 on the micro adjustment it will focus +1 further away, so if I try to focus on the eyes and it ends up focusing on the nose which is closer that means I have to add another + digit right?

same reversed right? If it focuses too far put negative adjustment?

On both my D300 and D800 even after using a tripod and chart, checking my lens af fine tuning I seldom need to do anything, most of my glass is best left at "0".
