Camera model 'family trees'

i mean 'family' in the sense of which newer models belong in the same group as and replace older models. eg: is the D3 in the same family as and got replaced by the D300 or in the same family as and got replaced by the D4? and in turn was the D300 replaced by the D3000? did the 5200 replace the 5100?, etc i guess i'm trying to figure out how the numbering system works since it seems quite confusing. i only ask because i would like to know what would be the most logical upgrade (or next in line) to my 5100.

D5000>>D5100>>D5200

But I don't think most people go that direction. From the D5100 most people want more than the D5200 offers. they tend to go up to the next level with the D7000 or D7100. That is the next logical step.
