Thanks Jonathan. That gentleman was the head man of the Iban longhouse we visited, we had lunch with his family. I feel meeting the people and seeing their way of life is such an important part of visiting another country.

I absolutely agree. My parents taught me that valuable lesson aged 10 in Seville. We went to the "touristy" flamenco on the hotel roof and then to the local flamenco in some dark dive. The difference was truly astonishing. It also emphasised for me in later life the difference between sombre B&W and vibrant colour photography. Whenever I travel personally (i.e. not on business) I always make sure we spend a great deal of time on local transport, in local bars, in local hostelries.

In my opinion the best adventures are the ones you cannot see coming! They're not always good, though. :friendly_wink:

Yeah, but there's something about planning and executing a trip like this that's extremely special.

We travelled up to Mount Kinabalu national Park where we stayed the night before heading up the mountain the next day. On the way we stopped for a break and some dinner in Serian and had a look round the market.

We walked part way up Mount Kinabalu, didn't have time (or the energy!) to go to the top. The fauna was more the highlight with wild Orchid and Pitcher plants.

These little Squirrels were obviously used to people heading up the mountain path as every time we stopped for a break they shot out hoping for food!

We even spotted a herd of Bornean Pygmy Elephant form the boat on the bank of the river. I was that close at one point that the 70mm end of my zoom was too long!
