Thanks Jonathan. That gentleman was the head man of the Iban longhouse we visited, we had lunch with his family. I feel meeting the people and seeing their way of life is such an important part of visiting another country.
I absolutely agree. My parents taught me that valuable lesson aged 10 in Seville. We went to the "touristy" flamenco on the hotel roof and then to the local flamenco in some dark dive. The difference was truly astonishing. It also emphasised for me in later life the difference between sombre B&W and vibrant colour photography. Whenever I travel personally (i.e. not on business) I always make sure we spend a great deal of time on local transport, in local bars, in local hostelries.
