Blank list that needs filling

You're welcome Lawrence. And, it's actually $600 USD...came to $800 Canadian for me. That exact same lens sells for $1400 at my local camera shop here in Saskatoon, so it's a heck of a deal. They were quite impressed when I brought it to them to fine-tune the focus. šŸ˜‰

Tokina 11-16 and Tamron 70-200 2.8 vc. In Olympus you could get the 12-40 2.8 pro and 40-150 2.8 pro. That covers you from 24-300 mm equivalent :)

Not sure why I can' seem to shake this need but ...

assuming you had no lenses at all and ...
you had a blank piece of paper with 4 lines on it that needed filling.

On those four llines you could write down the 4 lenses you would buy for your Nikon D7100 knowing what you know now.

What would your 4 choices be if you had a total budget of around $2,000.00?

I know you are all going to say depends on what you want to shoot;

Let's assume some more:
Portrait
Landscape
Macro
Street photography
Might shots
Nikon 28-85mm (does macro too) used 60 bucks OR the 24-85 VR G (haven't shot but want one costs about 300 on ebay)
Nikon 70-300 VR used 300 bucks
Tokina 105mm macro (from what I've heard) 450 bucks - I use a 105mm f/2.8 ai MF (the lens that shot the Nat Geo cover with green eyed afgani girl and the 28-85mm for macro) - someday I'll get the tokina and 24-85 and dump the 28-85 and 105mm
Nikon 20-35mm 400 bucks if you're patient on ebay
nikon 300m f/4.5 edif with teleconverters 300 bucks total

This isn't that much weight.

Horoscope Fish I can't tell you how disappointed I am that this is not the right lens.
Well better you figure that out before you plunk down any money! If it's not the right lens, it's not the right lens... I think we can all appreciate where you're coming from when it comes to streamlining our lens arsenal; it's not always a simple, cut-and-dried decision.

hey big fella - that's an awesome list and one i would lean towards.
In fact it is sort of my dilemma. I am close but not quite there.

I need (scratch that and replace with "want") a wide angle so for the Tokina or similar - tick.
I have a 90mm Tamron - not quite the Nikon 105mm but - half tick?
I have an 18-105 walk about and the 70-300 but feel the same way as you do about the 24-70 and the 70-200.

Oh and I have a Nikkor 35mm f1.8

Time to do some serious saving ...
check out the angry photographer on youtube (NOT SUITABLE FOR WORK) he goes to a great deal of effort to put people into awesome lens they can get on ebay. Camera lens are discontinued for many reasons not the least of which is cost to manufacture (less profit). New is highly overrated, many 30-40 year old Nikons should outlast new offbrand lens as well.

He has some interesting videos but his efforts at suspense merely add to the long winded approach :)
And the profanities don't add value but, that being said, I did learn a lot. Thanks for posting.

I think my current lens collection suits and no need to change.

Nikon 17-55/2.8 (used, $500)
Nikon 55/2.8 AI-s Macro (used, $100)
Nikon 35/1.8 DX ($150)
Nikon 70-300 VR (used, $300)

Still got money left from the budget. If I "need" a ultra wide, might add a Sigma 8-16.

reading through this thread I have decided ...

that everythig is so confusing that I am now totally undeided.

Leaning toward the Tokin 11-16
Keeping the nikon 35mm 1.8
Getting a Sigma APO 50-150mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM
Keeping the Tamron 90mm macro
And for now holding on to the 70-300 but ultimately changing that out to something faster

But still undecided ....

You should keep the 70-300 (fast focusing), drop the 50-150, pick up a 28-75mm nikon (60 bucks) and a 80-200 nikon (400 to 500) if you want fast. Swap the 70-300, 90mm, and 50-150 for a 28-75mm nikon macro, 80-200 and a 300mm f/4.5 nikon (with a 14B and 200 teleconverter) if that works better for you. You might as well get lens your grandkids can use especially if they're cheap on ebay. Those nikons will have very little depreciation, will last a lifetime, and all have really good reviews.

It sucks living in New Zealand when it comes to buying gear. No eBay, no Amazon, no Adorama, no B&H and shipping costs a fortune.
But there are a lot of other pluses. :)

Well I think I have finally decided what I want to stick with ...

I have bought a Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 new as part of a local stores clearance sale (NZ$379.00/US$240.00). Comes with the warranty. Its the older version without a focus motor which I do not need with my D7100. Sure it isn't a 2.8 but I don't shoot any sport and can't see the benefit of a small DoF in either landscape or interior shots (which can't be handled by my 35mm f1.8) - wide angle sorted.

I am keeping the 35mm f1.8 and Tamron 90mm f2.8 Macro.

I have added a brand new 50mm f1.8 D (NZ$150.00/Us$95.00) from the shop i work in with full warranty

So I now have three portrait lenses all in fast glass as well as the macro.

I have found a Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 for a reasonable price (NZ$625.00/US$395.00) and think I will pull the trigger on that one on Monday. This will be my new walk around lens to replace the 18-105 which I will sell together with my D5100 body.

For now keeping the 70-300mm but will upgrade if, and only if, I find a real bargain in a similar focal length (long end)

Crazy to have so many lenses but there you go.

Total spend about NZ$1150.00/US$726.00 - before realising whatever I can get for the sale of my D5100 and the 18-105mm
