I have a grip on my D5100 which makes the camera a better handful for me,the downside is no way would i consider it strong enough to mount the camera on a tripod via the grip, fortunately i dont use one very often, the other aspect again no problem to me but if you want to use the vertical grip release i consider the cable to be a nuisance.

Mike, I'm a big guy with big hands. So I use an aftermarket grip on my D90 and for my long exposure nightime bridge shots am always mounting them (grip & D90 w/70-300mm lens) on my tripod with no fear whatsoever. Believe me it's definetely strong enough.
My D90 grip doesn't require the the cable connector thing, but I have seen a couple of D3xxx's and D5xxx's that do and I agree with you it would be a major nuisance.
The reason I bought the MeiKe multi power batterry grip instead of the Nikon MB-D80 battery grip is cost the Meike battery grip with an extra Nikon EN-EL3 battery costs $90.00 new. While the Nikon MB-D80 battery grip with an EN-EL3 battery costs $180.00 or 2X as much.

Since I bought a battery grip for my D90, I can honestly say that shooting without it just plain feels...like I am forgetting something. It just leaves a nagging feeling of something not being right.

Also I think my grip with extra battery came out to like....40 bucks on Amazon. My girlfriend purchased it for me as surprise. And while not Nikon....my camera hasn't noticed....
