Battery Grip - really worth it??

I can see how the grip would help balance the camera when using a large lens. If I can find a used grip cheaply enough I may buy one.

yeah...kinda agree with you. The combo D7000+grip doesnt really as big as what i thought it was before... with the grip, it feels really comfort especially when i put on my 18-200.

Recommended to get one...

While the grip give more option when you shoot portrait, most times the camera battery last more than what you need. The most you bring a spare. It cost less and lighter.

But with the grip, it does give you that extra fps. I have not tried it and still don't need that yet. For now, I am happen with the stick battery.

The grip does not increase speed on The D7000/600 or 800 it just holds another battery and they switch from one to the other when the first is exhausted....

So how certain are you about this? Are you aware that you can increase the fps on the D800 in DX mode to 6 fps and when using certain batteries right?

For clarification using the D800 in DX mode without the battery grip will allow you to achieve up to 5 fps in DX and 1.2x crop mode

Adding a Nikon MB D12 and AA batteries will allow the camera to achieve up to 6 fps in DX mode. Therefore the grip can increase the fps in DX mode unless you have a reference from Nikon that proves me wrong.

I have a grip for my d3100 and honestly it was the best thing I bought. Not only does it feel good but it has a shutter release button for portrait shots. I love it

That's true but who would use AA batteries unless in an emergency.
I wonder how many shots you'd get out of a set of AA's, one or two ;-)

If you shot during your travels a lot, you will realize a grip adds unnecessary weight. If you need extra juice, a spare battery in your pocket will be lighter. All it takes is a couple of seconds for you to swap out the battery. As for looking good, the better your camera looks, the more you put yourself out there as a target for thieves and robbers, especially if you are traveling in areas where motorcycle snatch thieves are known to prowl.

Don't get me wrong, I do own a battery grip as well for my D700. I only use it when I shoot portraits in studio or outdoor for an extended period of time. Another good use of grips is when you need that extra juice for shooting remotely like doing overnight timelapse or startrails.

I have 2 batteries for my d300 and they last more than a day for over 1000 shots. If necessary, it is cheaper to buy another spare. The other advantage of the battery grip is if you need to shoot portrait, the additional button is quite useful.

I use the groups on my 7100 and 800e for two reasons, I have big hands and its more comfortable, the increased battery life.
Extra weight is negligible.

hi ,a a battery grip is an awsome tool, in the fact that if you suffer from camera shake only slightly, it is more stable when hand held because of the extra weight, photography is all about thinking of your subject and lighting etc, do not rush into snapping away, having a grip will make you feel like you are taking it seriously there fore enjoying your hobby,, hope this advise helps you decide, ,,good luck (mickhenso)

You don't have to buy a genuine nikon one, I bought a new Meike grip for my D5100 for about 45 dollars, works perfectly...
