Back-Button Focus

Few days back I read on this forum about Back-Button Focus. I started to watch tons of VDO's and today I did it. I set my great D7000 to AF-ON. I did lot sof shots, and it is just better in my hand now and it is so easy to recompose the cam.

Thanks to that guy who posted about it. (Sorry that I've forgotten who).

It seems that my D7000 motivates me to do some different things. :eagerness:

Ime getting on ok with it also, its just not second nature yet but it will be,the biggest advantage i have found is having AFS and AFC all the time.

I used it but switched back. 75% of the shots I do are in the portrait orientation. On the D3s the af button on the hand grip is very hard to find. I can never seem to find it unless I pull my head away and look for it. I know where it is but just can't feel for it:(

In the evening I tried capturing my daughter riding her bike. Tomorrow morning I will them download on the com and take a look how it worked out.

I feel so comfortable about this style of focusing

I use BBF for static subjects. Allows me to nail the focus, then not have to worry about it getting changed.

For moving subjects, I go back to the default / shutter release for focus.

I'm not 100% sure but i thought i read somewhere that you can assign AF-ON to the dof preview button on D7100. Seems like it could be a comfortable position for it.

Interesting, I thought most people use BBF for moving subjects in AF-C mode. But if it works then why change.

That's what is great about BBF. You leave it in AF-C mode so continuous auto-focus is available when you want it, but you can just take your thumb off the button and recompose, just like AF-S, without accidentally changing the focus everytime you touch the shutter button.

My approach as well...

It's AF-C, but the critical difference is... It's AF-C "on demand" and, more importantly to me, BBF separates focusing from dropping the shutter. I use BBF for everything, personally and while I'm primarily a stills sorta guy if I start shooting dodgy subjects, I simply roll a command wheel to increase the number of focus points (from my default of 9) to 21 or 51 depending on the subject matter.

Still, this IS a matter of finding what you're comfortable with and what works for you.

It does that a couple of weeks of heavy shooting till it becomes second nature. I pick up my wife's D7000 and it is not set for BBF and it drives me crazy.

Its also remembering i can lock focus on a birds eye if its sitting in a bush then compose any way i want with out the focus point changing,in the past i have always used just AFC so i would be ready for a BIF

I am obsessed with BIF also. I set up User 2 for BIF and with BBF set up I am ready for BIF with just one setting change.

I've toyed with the idea of using it, but thought i'd just stick to what i know

I discounted it only because i didn't realize i would have both focus modes at my finger tip (or thumb),and with needing reading glasses to make adjustments i am at the moment finding it great.

Next step when i get the Tamron back will be looking into the User settings

I had people hounding me to use Back Button Focus and the User 1 and User 2 setting for a while. Once I tried it and got used to it I am now the one hounding people to try it. LOL

This is what I love about the D7100. It has so many features that are so easy to use once you take the time to learn and use them.

Setting up BBF today myself. Time to dive in, and starting a class on the same day, might as well lump it in with all the new habits I'll need to pick up. :)

With bbf and af-c on. Do you need to keep the bbf pressed all the way through and it stays in
focus or do you release the bbf button for it to stay in focus?

It always continuously updates the focus while its pressed, once you let go the focus stays set at the last setting when you let go. You can press the shutter at any time either with the button pressed or not.

That was me who first posted about how to BBF. You're welcome!

After hark's intensive research it wasn't me that first posted about bbf. I just happened to post "how to set your camera up to do it with explicit details. So, I'm happy if I helped even one person set their camera up for bbf. NBD.
