Anyone upgrading to Windows 8 and want a $14.99 upgrade code?

I qualified for a couple $14.99 upgrades to Windows 8 and have one that I will not be using. It expires on Feb 28th so if anyone's interested in upgrading and can use this code, PM me.

As an IT professional, I shall be subjecting it to a PPTE before letting it loose on my home network!!! :p

But thanks for the offer anyway.... I have enough licenses for myself courtesy of MS :)

My personal opinion is that Windows 8 was primarily designed for pads and such, not for PC's and laptops. I've tried it.......didn't like it, but...that's just me. :)

$14 is a great price for the upgrade! If someone is looking for it they should jump on the offer.
Unfortunately I cant stand WIN 8 and wish I had my older Win 7 disk to reload... But I am also too stuborn NOT to let it defeat me.

I agree with Jack, it really is more designed for tablets but it does offer a few additional goodies for desktops. For one, it's a new and faster OS and is not layered upon earlier DOS coding. It also handles graphics slightly different than Windows 7 so you can extend your DIMM's a little further. In addition, you can now stack some 512 gigbytes of memory whereas Windows 7 the max is 16 gig (unless you have Windows 7 pro). Also, it has better security features than 7 and offers an in-house bitlocker encryption program. But truth be told, if this upgrade would have cost me more than $25, I wouldn't have opted to upgrade. But at $14.99 I figured I might as well.

My wife got me a new laptop (Win8) for Christmas. After worked with it for two weeks. Even did the Lynda.Com video on in. I found that the "Charms" bar on the right pops out every time you touch the mouse pad. It was very annoying. I discussed all this with the wife before taking it back. As part of the agreement, I used the money to buy her a new outfit and shoes.

I guess for $14.99 you can't complain about the price. I'm still not going there. I have XP Pro on the desk top and Win 7 Pro on an old T61 Lenovo lap top. Both work great.....never had a problem with either one of them. I build my own computers, so I'm funny like that. :)

Which brings me to my biggest peeve of all.........prices like $14.99. I mean...seriously.....are they ashamed to add that extra penny to round it off to $15? Do they really think they're fooling anyone with numbers like that? I think the general public are a lot more market savvy in this day and age than they were back when "marketing" people started messing with how merchandise is priced. $49.99........it's 50 bucks, people! $99.99.......you're dropping a C note, boys and girls! And of course this one always kills me...ONLY $999.99............it's a grand, ladies and gents! Gawd!

OK, I'm done ranting. :)

$15 is a great deal for any upgrade, but 8 is just too different for me. The biggest thing I dislike about 8, is that on all new machines from HP and Dell no longer come with a COA label on the bottom of the laptop. The actuation code is embedded in the bios and can not be retrieved or changed. Whats that mean? The version of windows 8 that comes with your computer is the only version you can get. You cant transfer it to a different PC or change the version with out going through an upgrade utility.

That is such utter BS to me. Not being able to access or change a product key to something you legally own.

So until this practice changes, I'm sticking with 7 pro 64 bit. It will last for years to come, and I can put it on any machine I want.

Bought my mom a new laptop with it on there, big mistake. Like others have said, it's for touch screens, otherwise, I wouldn't want it if they paid me to use it.

Legally OEM software has never been transferable. If you buy a pc with the o/s preinstalled your software must stay with that pc or become void. All they have done is make it more difficult to extract the info.

If you bought a retail version then you are free to uninstall it and reinstall on another pc.

OEMs get a list of product keys from MS which are specific to their hardware, hence the embedding in the BIOS (which is not new, just new to the way they do things now).
It's this that allows the likes of Dell, HP etc to sell/bundle an OS in so cheap with a new PC, and if you trawl through the T&Cs of the license, it will effectively say, this product is tied to this hardware.
It's also useful because it stops someone getting a product activation key from the bottom of a Dell machine, and using it to activate their HP machine... remember, the license is with the hardware that you bought, not the software (ie. you didn't buy the bundled OEM installed OS).
If you want to chop and change your Windows installs between different PCs, then thats when you have to go retail and get a legal non OEM version... then you're free to transfer to any PC you want (within of course the license limits)

If anyone ever needs to retrieve a serial from their windows machine, there's a great tool out there called Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder. Should work for the last two or three releases. Always helpful to have it written down somewhere in case you need to call MS. However as others have said, the manufacturer license is not transferable If you bought a system builder OEM disk from a retailer such as Newegg or Microcenter, you can transfer the license but would have to discontinue using the previous machine.

We get those prices here in Australia too, but they don't make anything smaller than a 5 cent coin here...

My thoughts on Windows 8 -

I agree that the tablet interface doesn't work very well - I rarely use the Start screen, and some of the now apps vs old programs are annoying. However behind the scenes it's a fantastic upgrade. It's a bit quicker depending on what your current hardware is. Bitlocker is nice, as is Storage Spaces. Backup seems easier. Videos in Chrome don't work very well when a flash player is required (I haven't been able to use Amazon Video since I upgraded, have to use IE10). Multiple screens can be problematic.

It's a mixed bag, for sure.
