Anyone considering an upgrade?

Agree with Glenn - the 24-120VR F4 is an awesome lens. DP Reviews have some real world photos with the D600 the lens most used is the 24-120VRF4.

If you place your order today you will have it in time for our CDN Thanksgiving :)

I have other "toys" I'd have to sell to justify a $3000 investment into a D600 and lens. I'm trying to be practical. I keep reminding myself of the professional photographer that had a highly acclaimed show of photos he took with throw-away cameras from the drugstore. Will a D600 really make a difference in my hobby, or is it just another technological toy that I really don't need.

:distant:

I haven't slept for 2 weeks tossing and turning over this dilemma. Not really. I sleep like a baby.

Nope, no "upgrade" for me. I am happy with what i have: D80 and D5100. Many people will buy this camera just because. Well, spending 3k "just because" is really senseless. I am happy for anyone who has pre-ordered one or is planning to do so. I suppose in this case, you have to have a really good reason to get into Full Frame cameras. I have no reason to. It won't give me "better" pictures, i'm the one that needs to give myself "better" pictures. I remember when people went nuts and posted "pics taken with my D800". Great.... but without pixel peeping, i see no difference from ones taken with any other Nikon DSLR from the last 4 years. Again, don't get me wrong, im happy for the folks that have done their pre-orders. I always like getting boxes with goodies in them :)

I have finally come to the conclusion that with the 2000 dollar price point (I'm hearing reports that in places like Australia the camera is significantly more expensive...like 2500 which is weird) FX is still a little to expensive for mass consumption. I'd wait till next year sometime to see if the price falls to 1500-1800. The D7K is a THOUSAND dollars cheaper folks! Is FX really worth that grand? Think of all the different pro level lenses you could put on a D7K for a grand. I think we will yet see a replacement for the D300 although perhaps not until next year.

I'll pass on this one...2K is close but no cigar for me and I bet for a ton of other folks too. 1500 and it would have been a runaway.

Rick - the lens that you are looking for is the Nikon 24-120mm f4 VRII with Nano coating. When mounted on a FX camera, it will give you the same field of view and range with your 16-85mm mounted on a DX.

You also get a constant aperture and it demonstrates equally sharp as the 24-70mm f2.8 on all corners when stopped down to f5.6 (compared to the 24-70mm f2.8 @ f4) based on my personal test.

In other words, the lightweight and great IQ that you are accustomed with your current line up is already available in a FX format plus more since you get less distortion at 24mm compared to 16mm.

So, did you pre-order one yet?

I'm not sure if I'll be upgrading to the D600 or not, but I had similar feelings about my 16-85mm, DX versus the new 24-85mm, FX lens. I'm going to examine your recommendation of the 24-120mm. I have read a few of the reviews that are posted on the Nikon site. They're all positive, especially when compared to those of the 24-85mm. The reviews for the 24-120mm are as positive as those of the 16-85mm. My only concern was the aperture of f4, but you make a valid point about a consistent aperture. Thanks for the input.

I'll probably buy in store at my dealer. The 24-120 gets some poor reviews, are they incorrect?

I do not consider the D600 a consumer level camera at a budget price. The specs put it at a semi-pro level with a prosumer body. This is not a toy for the masses as everyone hoped for and I'm glad it isn't. I'm looking for more IQ and the ability for larger prints (to sell), than I can squeeze out of my D5100. I feel that I have grown out of the D5100. Seems in my case to be a natural upgrade. If I don't, I'll always be wondering, it's just my nature.

Phillydog - so rude of me for not backing up my statement. So here are some image samples that I took when I still had this lens using it with my Ex-D700 and D7000.

I went to Bestbuy today and played with their D800 display. They had a 70-300mm FX lens on it. The D800 is a nice camera. I took a few snaps of the interior of the store. The increased dynamic range was noticeable.

IMO DR is what separates the newer cameras (eg D7000 D800) from the older ones not just mega pixel count which personally I don't think matters to much. DR is where it is at. There is a noticeable difference in the images even though the older cameras are still fantastic.

I was sniffing around a couple camera shops today. One said they would be allotted 6 bodies and 2 kits in the first shipment.

Yep. I got D600 on the brain, right now. I'm not sure yet. If I do, do I keep my D7000 as a backup? Do I even need a backup? I'm not a cash-earning pro. Do I sell it? If I do buy the D600, do I also get the new Nikon FX lens for $599? I've got a few FX lenses, already. Right now, I'm content with the D7000, but the thought of getting a full-framed camera with higher megapixels, does sound a little appealing.

Back up for what?

If you are not a Pro.... my opinion would be to SELL IT.

Why?

It will only depreciate. A D7200 is probably just around the corner. You don't really need a 2nd camera body, I would guess and you will end up using the D600 almost exclusively. There is no turning back from BETTER!

The minute I got my D800, I sold my D90. As much as I loved the camera, there was no point.

Sell it while it is still worth something.

You been bit now there is no turning back. Your wallet will be taking it on the chin. Sorry Rick there is no cure but to hand over Andrew Jacksons to a camera store retailer.

I agree. You're right. I'd have to sell it to compensate myself and upgrade. I exaggerated my concerns. I was on a writing tangent. :D I'm not sure if I'm going to even buy a D600. I'm still in contemplation and the gathering of information.

When the D800 was announced in February, I sold my D700 with the 24-120mm to fund my D800. I think that was a smart move since I was able to sell my now old D700 above $2k.

Shifting to Full Frame is costly so no one should be pressured to get one. Just avoid forums like this to avoid temptation.

Too expensive ..I need 2 so thats £4000 + all new lens 28-300 VR ..no profit in it for my wedding photography business ...I need a revised D7000/D7200 ..
D400 will probably be too expensive also .. so have to wait up to 12 months if tom hogan is right
