Here is the info from my camera. And I can tell you that I had him sitting about 3 ft. from a wall between a door with a window in it on one side and a big window on the other side. I used one of my clip on lights to shine behind him to eliminate the shadow on the wall from the flash. And I bounced the flash (SB600) off the ceiling.

Mar.4,2014 - Day 63

My birthday was earlier this week. My son sent the picture on the left to his Dad and asked him to make me a watercolour. His Dad is a good artist and he did a fantastic job, on the right. (The picture on the left was from a few years ago, but the one on the right is my picture for today.

Hope you had wonderful B-day Ambient :)

Love your winter trail. I have no idea what those bushes are with the red branches but we have them here and I really like the bit of colour they give with so much white around :) I also like the pinky orange glow of the sun setting on the snow. Looks like you had a lovely day for a walk :)

Mar.3, 2014 - Day 62

I don't plan to take up portrait photography so I don't own any lights or umbrellas or reflectors. But my son needed a photo for his online profile so I did the best I could with what I've got! I have never taken a shot like this before. Maybe you guys could give me some tips. I am sure there are things I could have done different even without equipment.

You asked for a bit of input.

1. Get further away from the wall. I can see blemishes on the wall and the last has a shadow.
2. Your focus seems a bit soft from either the focus mode or the shutter speed. The Exif data says auto focus face priority. I will admit that I am weak in knowledge on the shooting modes of any of my cameras I have because I shoot 90% manual and 10% shutter or aperture. With that said, I would have shot single focus (AF-S) point in manual mode and focused on his eye.
3. Tripod mount with VR off. If hand held kick the shutter speed up to 1/90 or greater. I know 1/90 isn't an option, but on that focal length with cropped sensor I would not shoot below 1/90.
4. It's a bit hot on HIS left side (third shot is hot on both sides). A thin white sheet (single layer not folded in half unless needed) draped in front of the window will help to allow the light through and soften it.

Hope this helps. Not a bad start.

Thanks Snaphappy! I did have a good day. And my husband bought me a monopod!
Those red shrubs are a type of dogwood. They grow wild here in Ontario. I also like the colour they add in winter.

Hope this helps. Not a bad start.

Thank you. I really appreciate the help. My son just finished university and is looking for a job. So I wanted to try and get as good a shot as I could for his online profile. Luckily he knows how to use a program called "Picasso", I think. He said he was going to make some adjustments himself! But I will definitely try a few of those tips.

Mar.6,2014 - Day 64

Some light painting.

I saw something like this done pretty well. I am trying out different lights. And my focus was off. Way off!

With this one I was trying to bring out the sculptured sides of this vase.

Mar.7,2014 - Day 65

Out from 6:30 am until 10:30 pm with no photo ops! Just shot a quick photo or two of some bottles I gathered to play around with light with.

Okay. I am bowing out of the 365. Yesterday you got a picture of my dinner. Just because I had to post. I have some ideas of things I want to pursue but I don't have time since I have to get the shot taken and posted right away. Here is what I was working on today:
Picture68.jpg

But I don't have anymore time today to play around with it to see if I can get what I want to work. I feel it is all rush rush rush!

I love all the photos that get posted because of the 365 and I can see improvement in other peoples but I feel I am spinning my wheels. So I will work at my own pace and post any shots I feel worthy. I think a project 52 is more my speed!

Ambient, I hope that you continue to post, I love to scan through your shots. You are really creative and I get good ideas from you. They told me that March is the hardest time to post everyday and I believe it. Do you remember my wheat shot? I shot that on one of those days that I had worked 13 hours and they were a really difficult 13 hours. When I came home I knew that I needed a shot and just halfheartedly started shooting the wheat. I was so surprised when it turned out so well. I guess you never know when the creative spark will bite. Keep up the great work. :)

Ditto the sentiments re your continued posting.

Wendy that is so true that sometimes the ones you think are just so-so turn out WOW! Other times I think I have nailed a photo only to discover otherwise.
Let's hope Ambient can find the time without feeling pressured to continue.

Thanks for giving it a shot! You have to be true to yourself. You can't have fun shooting for us. You need to shoot for you.

But don't let this thread die. You have some fantastic shots here! Post when ya can. We can wait.

Love the sneaker light paint shot. Really cool effect, even if it didn't go as planned. Wish my oops shots turned out that good.

Thanks everyone! I was just at my wits ends yesterday. I accidently deleted my second set of shots and couldn't recover them. I had lost the light so I couldn't try again. I thought my husband and I were going to divorce over the skids that were in the one shot I had left! I used spot removal or some such to get rid of them. LOL

Anyways I will continue to post just not everyday. There are some really talented people posting here and I get ideas from them as well. That is what I really like about this forum is that no one minds if you try out one of their ideas. I am learning a thing or two and I am having fun. (Except for the days when I am over stretched for time.)

Been playing with light painting again, I would really like to get good at it!

And here is the photo that started the kerfuffle yesterday! I managed to recover some of them today.

I was trying to improve on this shot and I removed the window screen.

With the 365 you don't have to post every day, you just have to take a shot every day, you can post at your own pace as long as you label it correctly.

Sorry to read you're out of the 365, but make sure you keep showing us your work.

Ok I thought if I was more than a day or so late posting that I would be out. But good to know. I have been shooting everyday so I haven't lost my mojo for for it! It takes how many days to form a habit? In all honesty I don't even know if I would be in the running for a "prize" as I am located in Canada and don't know if an Amazon gift card would be useful to me. I was only interested in doing this because it would help me get my camera out everyday and shoot so I would learn.
I think that would be a real "prize" for me. I still make stupid mistakes almost everyday. Anyways here are my latest shots:

Apparently they won't load. Not sure what is happening. Will try later!

Oh and by the way Jake if you happen to read this, you made me happy with your Day 65 dinner shot and comment. I was so discouraged when I had to shoot my dinner this month! Thank you, I am not alone!
