Can someone shed a bit of light on this lens for me. Are there different versions? I have checked fleabay, and they seem to vary wildly in price. I have found the version in the piccy below locally, and am considering my options. What would it be worth roughly in great condition, no scratches, fungus etc?

There are 3 or 4 different versions of this lens. Great bokah but slow focus in my experience. I sold mine a few months ago due to lack of use. I preferred using the 70-300 VR G.

I believe there are/were 4 versions of the AF 80-200 2.8:

1. non D push/pull zoom
2. D version of the push pull
3. AF-D "Ring". This one is still in production
4. AF-S version

I think the AF-S version is the 70-200, not 80-200.

The push pull lens and the dual ring both take wonderful photos. I have a preference though for the dual ring. They are a little slower focusing in comparison to the 70-200 f/2.8 G version. The big difference though is the VR capable on the 70-200 f/2.8, it definitely helps in making nice images. Still I would love to own a 80-200 dual ring, I rent one on occasion when I am shooting wildlife or going to a sporting event, one day I hope to purchase a used dual ring. Its just a little out of my reach right now.

Ok, thanks for the info people. After talking to the guy, it's the push pull version. I'm guessing $400 is a good price if its is as good as he says!!

That is the going price for a push pull version. You will not be disappointed with its optical performance.

I just bought a two ring version today for NZ$850, but also on the auction site was another for $NZ950 and a push-pull for NZ$990. I think the latter was being hopeful, a store has several for around NZ$650. I understand either variety can produce excellent results, I spent several weeks worrying that I could get faster AF since several Sigma 70-200 HSM II were available for similar money. I also got the worst possible picture of back/front focus with the ED by reading too many dpreview forum posts.. I'm sure thats a case of the volume of the internet bringing out those people with the worst stories.. time will tell.

My 70-200 f2.8 vrII focuses really fast and both the bokeh and iq is amazing. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I purchased one of the "dual-ring" 80-200 2.8 D ED lenses about two years ago and have used a lot. Some events, it will be the only lens I use outside. The big driver in the cost of these is condition, so be careful of a "bargain".

Optically, it is very good. Speed wise, it is slow. You can limit its range of focus to improve this somewhat. It is seems to focus faster on my D700 than my D90. As good as it is, I plan to replace it with a 70-200 2.8 AFS one day.

Good fortune with this.

A bit late to the discussion but I have been looking at these in detail myself the last few weeks - as an alternative option to the 70-200 f/2.8 (or the 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G). A couple of good links for anyone looking at this in future are:

GBT - Appreciate a heads up on which stores you came across the 80-200's you mentioned above here in NZ, if you see this...?

Hi John, There are several push-pull (earlier varieties) at Photo & Video in Christchurch, I bought mine from an auction on trademe and currently there is an almost new one on there, but the owner wants a reasonably steep NZ$1250. Otherwise Expert InfoTech has one for NZ$1370 new, so long as you're comfortable with parallel imports - I understand Nikon NZ will not cover grey imports under their warranty.

Hope that helps

Thanks Bryan - I was wondering if it was Photo & Video in Chch you were referring to - I was just asking them about one of their 80-200's a week or so ago... Yes I've seen the one on TM, not sure that's much of deal (especially if it's a Parallel Import). And yeah I've dealt with Expert Infotech a bit myself (for other stuff) so have looked at their new prices - as you say Nikon NZ won't do warranty on the PI's. TBH I have started to move away from the 80-200 idea because of size and weight - if I went that way would probably look to stretch to a 70-200 f/4 - but instead am now looking to probably settle on a 70-300 (either Nikon or Tamron) if I decide my 18-200 is insufficient - being a non-DX it will provide 105-450mm zoom, and so I would expect to be able to use it most of the time without needing to push out to the 300mm extreme (where I believe both brands are regarded a little soft), and it's a lot smaller & lighter than the 70-200 or 80-200 options...

:)
