Change of mind as LR will not use a catalogue on a network. So I am moving it to my Dropbox folder where I can point my laptops to.

Do you mean using a catalog file on a network volume, or catalog RAW files on a network volume? RAW files can be cataloged on a network drive, but I think putting your main catalog on a network vol would be slooooowwwww......
It will catalog RAW's if you mount the volume as a drive, rather than as a UNC path. On Windows, you would "Map a network drive" and give it a drive letter, then tell LR to use that drive letter (LR sees drive letters as local) on a Mac / Linux I believe you need to look at "Mounting an SMB volume to a local mount point" , so you would crete the mount point /NAS for example, then mount "//NAS IP/Volume" to "/NAS" and point LR to /NAS.

Not sure how close Mac OS is to Linux, but you would add then correct entry to a file called fstab in /etc

Now with this extra storage I am going to 'try' and sort out my filing system and LR... Does anyone have a suggestion on which is the best way to do this when using a NAS system? I am currently transferring all my photos and most Data to the 3TB HDD on the NAS, and I will be adding drives as I get them.

Are you maintaining a remote or offsite copy too? I use Backblaze to accomlish this.

Yes I am hoping for a remote / offsite copy of the catalogue, all my RAW files will be kept on my NAS but with LR's smart preview I can make changes etc anywhere and it will be done on the original if I need to keep those changes.
@SteveH with it using Dropbox the catalogue is still on my HD as it has a folder which syncs to the web folder. I have 58gb available on my free dropbox.

Well my 4 Bay NAS arrived today and I have just set it up.

Wasn't too hard although I could not find it by connecting it to the modem so had to connect direct to my iMac and share its ethernet port as internet.

But all in all it was very straight forward and I now have 3TB on a Gigabit connection where all my photos will be stored, later I will get more HDD's and then have a full 4 x 3TB HDD's running. This will allow for easy backups etc.

I am now transferring my data from my mac's folders, 600GB is going to take around 3hrs.

What RAID configuration are you using with your NAS? RAID 0 can leave you in a bad way in the unfortunate event of a failure.

X-Raid is nice when it comes to upgrading drive size down the road. My NetGear NAS started off with 4x 500GB drives some 10 years ago, and has been expanded a few times since then.

Ok all photos are transferred so far. LR is building smart preview but just got informed that power will be off for around 4 hrs and my UPS will not last that long.
